Looking for boat plans

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Open-water rowing : One Thread

Hi, I am looking for any information on plans or other kits for boats similar to the Atlantic Challenge boats. Can someone point me in the direction?

Thanks

The Atlantic Challenge Boats are 38' Bantry Bay Gigs, copied from a boat in a Dublin museum. Dozens have been built around the world by members of the Atlantic Challenge clubs.

Another gig that is raced in several countries is the 32' Pilot Gig, originally from the Scilly Isles. The annual championship of these boats brings almost 100 boats to a single starting line. A few of them have been built in the United States.

A third gig was designed in the US. It's known to some as the Times Square Whitehall, as the first boat was built in a Times Square storefront and wheeled down 42nd Street to the Hudson when it was finished. Designed by Mike McEvoy, dozens of these boats are now raced by teenagers in the New York - New England area.

To find more information about these boats, try searching the web for the first two by name. For the American-made Pilot Gigs, contact Team Sqauish (Massachusetts) at teamsaqush@aol.com. For the Times Square Gig, contact Floating the Apple at floapple@aol.com or visit http://www.floatingtheapple.org/.

If you are looking for comparisons of these boats or suggestions for others, you might contact Ed McCabe who runs the Maritime Program at the Hull Lifesaving Museum in Massachusetts. He can be reached at hullmuse@channel1.com.

Judging by the timing of this question, I wouldn't be surprised if this is actually referring to the Ward Evans Atlantic Rowing Challenge (www.wearc.com).

There is information on the design in this review as well as contact details:

If on the other hand you are looking for plans for the Bantry Bay gig, Ken Woods of Atlantic challenge Canada has the state of the art plans for the gig. We used them in Tacoma, WA., for a gig that went to Denmark in '98. You can find Ken on the Atlantic challenge website

If you seek plans for a much smaller, yet of historical/open configuration, boat, Ship's Company (www.shipscompany.org) has adapted an Iain Oughtred design (his TAMMIE NORRIE, 13' 6" glued plywood lapstrake) to a circa 1800 jollyboat (smallest of a ship's boats). You can obtain plans of TAMMIE NORRIE (original with centerboard) for $117 from Iain in Scotland (see his excellent book Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding Manual, which lists other designs of his), or charter a c.1800 version via Ship's Company (in the realm of $7900 and six months). Contact me for further information; see jollyboat photos at SC website.
