If you are working a pattern that you think is too complicated to follow in your head (i.e., has 24 rows to a pattern), just write out each row on an index card and flip through the deck as you go. Keep a rubber band around it when you're not using it, and it's also a good idea to number the cards, in case they get out of order somehow.
