How Many Know Who Elizabeth Coblentz Is?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

When we use to live in Maryland, there was a weekly article in our local newspaper that was written by Elizabeth Coblentz. She is Old Order Amish and wrote about her family life and recipes. A short while after moving to Ohio I found her articles in a farm journal but it was one we don't subscribe to. Yesterday my husband picked one up and noticed that she has a website (not maintained by her of course but by her editor). You can find it at www.theamishcook.com.

She and her husband were married in 1956 and he passed away recently (during the last year or two, I believe). She still lives on their 100+ acre farm.

I really enjoy reading the articles of what she and her family have been up to the past week and it's a great place for good recipes (good and fattening that is - LOL).

I forgot to add that on her website there are pictures too. No people pictures of any Amish but pictures of her place and her editor with his family.

Elizabeth's column is in our local Sunday paper. About one month ago, she was at our local library to sign autographs for her cookbooks. No picture taking though.

I read of her in a syndicated newspaper article and have checked out the website. Wish she was in our paper every week. I enjoyed reading what I have found.

I have never heard of her or read any of her works. I will check out the web site as I am very fascinated with the Amish. Although I don't go along with some of their beliefs, I find their lifestyle fascinating. Thanks!

FYI- Elizabeth passed away on Tuesday Sept 17, 2002. Very unexpected. She was on a book signing tour in Missouri according to our local paper. (I live in the same county as Elizabeth).

Elizabeth Coblentz was a very warm caring person. My mom lives beside her brother Chris Graber in Bryant IN. My family has became very close and are accepted by all in the Amish community. They have gone to a few gatherings like birthday parties and such, My brother told how Elizabeth would sit and just watch and listen to all with note book in hand, loving that she was surrounded by family and friends. The Amish are just as normal as the rest of us, except for the pure quiet way of life. Their was a warmth in her smile and in her heart that most people do not have, God Rest Her. May she live in peace watching over her family beside her husband Ben.
