EOS 5 (A2E) and plain TTL flash with the 380EX

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hi folks,

I managed to find a good deal on a used EOS-5, and I'm wondering how the flash performance is with plain TTL. I have a 380EX which is being used with an EOS-3 in E-TTL, but according to the manuals, it reverts to plain TTL with type-B bodies (like the EOS-5).

With the EOS-3, I use the 380EX with a StoFen OmniBounce diffuser, with the flash head usually tilted up 45 degrees. Is there any serious problem doing this when using plain TTL? Under/overexposure problems? I heard A-TTL flashes like the 540EZ have some problems doing this (?)

How does TTL perform with close ups, as in 1:1 macro? With the EOS-3, I have to dial in -1 to -1.3 stops flash exposure compensation. Would plain TTL flash on the EOS-5 be consistent enough so that I can work out some kind of FEC like this? Or have you found it over/underexposing arbitrarily with close-ups?

Thanks!

PS: In case you're wondering why I don't test it out myself, I haven't bought the 5 yet. Thought I'd get some feedback first. Thanks.

I'm a chrome shooter and I use TTL in bounce mode with my EOS A2/420EX and it works fine. I normally use the off-shoe cord 2 for macro and it works great, but I haven't tried the same setup as you.

Thanks for the input.
