canon's 28-105 vs tamron's

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

i'm thinking of upgrading my EF28-80 to a something like a 28-105 zoom because i want the medium telephoto focal range and non-rotating front.I compared canon's 28-105 with tamron and found that they have nearly the same lens constructions and no. of elements. The only difference is that canon provides usm ,FTM and larger maximum aperture of 3.5-4.5 (tamron is 4-5.6) but that doesn't mean a lot to me.Canon's is 1.5 times more expensive than tamron's.If i don't want those luxurious features like silent focusing and FTM,tamron is a better buy? Any comment is appreicated, thanks

Tamron is cheaper but you get what you pay for. The Canon 28-105 will give you alot better results than the lens you have now or the Tamron. It's worth the extra $.

Canon. Definately the Canon.

Those Canon features should mean a lot to you. USM/FTM focusing-- it's damn hard to use my old Arc Form EF lenses after getting used to the USM and the ability to touch up focus. A half stop on the long end may not seem like much, but it could spell the difference between getting the photo or getting the photo muddy. The Canon is a better lens. It's only shortcomings are a bit of distortion, especially at 28mm. But it's not noticeable unless you shoot architecture.
