Exceptional in that is was rarely used for something like a cruxifiction.

Yes nail or nails is the answer. Nails were expensive. Ropes were more often used. In fact archeological evidence for the use of nails had never been found until recently, in the foot of one skeleton.

The coliseum was built with the loot sacked from the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. This wasn't just the gold and adornments of the temple proper, but the savings of the majority of wealthy Jews was also kept there and taken along with the temple loot.
