Global warming effect `reversing'

19jan02

WASHINGTON: New measurements show the ice in West Antarctica is thickening, reversing earlier estimates that the sheet was melting.

Scientists concerned about global warming had worried that higher temperatures could melt the massive ice sheet, causing a rise in sea levels. But new flow measurements for the Ross ice streams indicate that movement of some of the ice streams has slowed or halted. If the thickening is not merely part of some short-term fluctuation, it represents a reversal of the long retreat of the ice, say researchers at the California Institute of Technology.

The finding comes less than a week after a paper in Nature reported Antarctica's harsh desert valleys have grown noticeably cooler since the mid-1980s.

I wondered if you'd find that. I read about it in my local newspaper a couple of days ago. Not only is the temperature lowering, but the thickness of the ice sheets in the area is increasing.

It's very difficult to know who to believe or disbelieve in this stuff. Has anyone here stayed in the same general geographic area their entire life?

I grew up in Wisconsin and while I lived there, from 3 to 24 I noticed that the actual start of winter seemed to move farther down the calendar. It still seemed to last as long but it got colder later and stayed colder later. Since then I can't say as I moved to warmer climes. I guess what I tend to believe the most is individuals with no agenda and honest observations. Anyone???

I've lived within a one hundred mile radious of this place in NE Texas all my life. The winters do seem to be starting later. Some years we have very little winter at all. I believe this is going to be one of them. Up until about 15 years ago, we began to have freezing precip of some sort around Thanksgiving and continued to have it a couple of times/month or more until mid-March. Then we stopped having much if any at all. My mother and her mother both grew up here also, and lived here virtually all their lives. They both said the winters were shorter and milder than when each of them were growing up. They have both been dead for years. My grandmother was born here in 1888. She said when she was a child there was almost always ice in the water in the ditches from the first of November until late March. She should have know, because they walked most everywhere they went.

Do I think the weather change is causeed by what humans have done and are doing? No. I think it is a normal fluctuation that has been going on in cycles since before anyone even had a written language. There have always been changes. The most constant thing about nature is that it does change.

"Not only is the temperature lowering, but the thickness of the ice sheets in the area is increasing." Hmmm! I wonder what is causing the ice sheets to thicken when there is almost no precipitation in the Antarctic.

We have only lived in this area for 3 1/2 years but we have heard alot of stories from the people who have lived here all their lives. They say that it use to start snowing here in Oct and the snow stayed on the ground until May. Since we have been here, the snow usually melts before the next storm comes. The longest we've seen snow stay on the ground has been about 4 weeks. This year it has hardly snowed at all! One year, our neighbor went to take his truck to get some feed for his hog. Some how he got the truck stuck in the snow and was unable to get it out until spring. We know two brothers in their 80's who used to run a portable sawmill. During winters they use to set the sawmill up on the frozen river to gain access to the timber on the other side. I have yet to see even a thin crust of ice form on the same river. Another neighbor use to drive a school bus in the early 80's. He said back then there was no such thing as snow days. That if they had cancelled school because of snowy conditions, the kids just wouldn't have gone to school all winter. They would put chains on the school bus and run the routes.

I grew up in Western Massachusetts, when I was real young we use to get 3 + feet of snow and it would stay the whole season.. The last 5 or 6 years, when it has snowed it would either melt or be melted by rain. We still get blizzards and all, but the snow just does not last. It use to never go above freezing, yet every other day now is 40's, sometimes even 50's.... 50 degress in New England in the middle of January and February is unheard of.

I do belive it is global warming. We destroy the environement each and every day. I really wish instead of faster and cheeper methods we went to more conservative approaches. Solar power, electricty, Natural gas vice oil etc... Sure your car might not go 150mph anymore, but at least your great great gandchildren will know what its like to build a snow man.
