greenspun.com : LUSENET : Raising meat rabbits for profit : One Thread

I am starting this because I am very unhappy with the forums I have found so far. This is a discussion forum for raising meat rabbits. Either for commercial use or home use only. Everyone is welcome.

My first response has to be from someone from PETA, LOL

I am so tired of people that play games. I want to establish a forum that will address raising rabbits. I want to learn. My goal is to produce 100 fryers per week. I have found that snake buyers pay alot more then the processing plants. We need to pull our recources and develop markets. I am not worried about "fluffy" my pet bunny. I am worried about marketing a commercial recourse. Please join me

Good luck with your new forum Tracy. Until the drought hit us hard this winter I raised New Zealand whites commercially.

Here are a few links that might be helpful to someone getting started.

http://www.3-cities.com/~fuzyfarm/ This is Pat Lamar's website. She's president of the Professional Meat Rabbit Association.

www.prma.org is the Professional Meat Rabbit Association. Excellent information and worth far more than the $10 it costs to join.

http://www.msstate.edu/dept/poultry/pub1384.htm Mississippi State Extension Service

A search for Dean Goforth will turn up information. He has a lot of websites.

An important thing to remember in raising rabbits is that there is no one right way.

Have fun!

Hi, Tracy.

I am glad to see this forum as we have been toying with the idea of getting into rabbit production for our meat, with a notion of what that could lead to ie business-wise. Good luck, and I hope to be a regular here. Thanks!

Thanks for starting this forum, Tracy! I look forward to learning more about meat rabbits and less about sandwiches and dogs. :-)

Hi Tracy,

Great idea !! I raise NZW and Standard Rex rabbits for Commercial Breeding Stock. I only have a small herd right now but am growing. My location (at this time) doesn't afford me the room I need, but will be moving to our 22 acres before long and then I will be able to expand. I have the FR1000 NZW, M70 NZW and the CR100 Standard Rex lines. I raised Rabbits back in the 90's in Florida and had to sell due to moving to Maine. Have been trying to get back into it ever since...Now I finally made it !! There is nothing more rewarding than raising rabbits !! Don't know if I will make much profit on them, but the enjoyment of watching them and seeing their individual personalities is enough for me !! At this time I am have too many bucks compared to the does I have, but that's okay too. I have 6 bucks, 7 does and 45 babies !!

I am glad to see this forum and I will be a regular here also. I am a member of the Professional Meat Rabbits Association, National Marketing Enterprises. With the Rabbits I have, I have the option of all three markets. Meat, fur and breeders. I am looking forward to this forum!! Thanks again!

Hi, I am so glad that you are starting this up! I hope to get into meat rabbits soon. I'm still in the plannning stage but I hope to start up in the next few months. When I saw rabbit meat at the store for 5 dollars a pound I was stunned. It will also be a great way to keep my 5 teenagers fed. I am reading everything I can get my hands on and hope to learn a lot from this site. Thanks for starting it up! Buffy
