Individual Health Insurance and Pre-existing condition

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My husband may be getting laid off and he'll need to find his own insurance, if possible (especially since COBRA is so expensive). Does anyone know if you can get an individual policy if you have diabetes?

Hi; My company did away with pre-existing condition clauses a few years ago.I am not sure but didn't Clinton sign legislation to stop the pre-existing clauses ? Ourfarm

Our individual insurance has dropped us after 9 years of not filing a claim. My husband had a heart attack and they paid for that then they figured out a way to drop us by pulling ut of our state. When we moved here they transferred our coverage. It seems they (individual insurance policies) can drop you if they drop the whole state ---- it seems that our family was the only one they had in this state. Now we are strugging to find health insurance. I hope that you have better luck than we are.

I took ALFA health insurance instead of COBRA at a savings of 40% and no pre existing.

Jay I had Alfa every thing was fine untill a claim, then I learned a lesson. Check it out and make up your own mind.

I have heard the same from others, but the cancel comes after a major catastophic claim. Figure for now as long as it handles my normal maintenance that runs 60 to 70 % of the premium and holds that one MM/CI claim as an ace in the hole, it'll do for now

Jay - what is ALFA? The only thing I could find on the web is down there where you are. I am going to have to look for some reasonable health insurance also.

ALFA started out as Alabama Farm Association, later becomng a generalized insurer. Check the area ag associations in your area for historicals on what they may have.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on which side you are on) Insurance companies are like other businesses. As long as they follow government issued guidelines, they can pretty much make their own rules (I've worked for a couple of different ones in my many years)
