VCD Slideshow Pictures Appear as Broken Bars

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Used Nero 5 to burn a VCD slideshow of 47 jpgs on a Memorex Platinum CD-RW. My Sony DVD player recognizes the CD-RW but the pictures appear only on one side of the screen, the other side is the Sony logo. The pictures that do show are broken up and in bars. When next picture shows up, it's a mixture of the picture before it and so on. Any advice would be appreciated!

What was the resolution of the original JPEGs? You first have to prepare your JPEGs so that they are at least 800x600 (4:3) before shoving them onto Nero. And Nero versions before the latest 5.5.6.4 have bugs where menu and still MPEG VCDs are concerned. Lastly Sony DVD players are not too happy with CD-R/RW, whatever the box or the ads or the salesman says.

There is an excellent guide at www.labdv.com to making a VCD slideshow using Nero. It's in the English section. LabDV runs on a free server, so please be patient as it will take time to load. If you follow the directions there, you should have no problems. I must disagree a little with Mehmet's post. I have a lot of experience with Sony DVD players and they actually do support CD-RW fairly well, although all CD-RW discs are not alike and some brands may work better than others. It has been my experience that at least in the USA, Sony DVD players fall into 2 categories: 1) Those that don't officially support CD-R and CD-RW and will play SVCD. These machines do support most CD-RW brands and they will work with Prime Peripherals brand CD-Rs, which you can buy in the US at Office Max. No other brand of CD-Rs is known to work in these players. 2) Those that do support CD-R and CD-RW, but will not play SVCD at all. They work fine with VCD burned to CD-R and CD-RW. I mention SVCD because some people might care to know that some Sony's have zero support for the format. VCD is no problem, it's just a question of whether your Sony will play it on the particular media you use. I can personally verify that Sony brand CD-RW discs work fine on Sony DVD players, even the ones that officially don't support it. I have never tested a Memorex CD-RW on a Sony DVD player, so I can't say if there are or are not issues with this particular brand. Upgrading Nero is a good idea and maybe trying to use a Sony brand CD-RW might help.
