Jerusalem arichoke source : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We are seriously considering using a mass planting of jerusalem artichokes on 3-4 acres of heavily weeded land to help clear it. We plan on following-up with a rotation of hogs. We need to know of a source for the tubers - I found them at Johnney's Selected Seeds but the most they offer are four pound sacks. Any input would greatly be appreciated. Thanks,

I know of a farmer in Mich that sells organic chokes,, but he is out for this year. Let me know if you want the email address

Fedco Seeds, a Waterville, Maine-based seeds-trees cooperative generally hasn Jerusalem artichokes available. Their website is Not only do they have almost everything you could want, but they have the lowest prices that I've found. We plant jerusalem artichokes in tubs because if you plant them in the garden they become a weed almost overnight The tubers you don't harvest simply grow and multiply again next season. A few tubers generate a lot of tubers in the fall. We harvested a wheelbarrow full after planting half a pound. Now they're in the basement and we're trying to figure out ways to use them. Recipes seem to be limited in scope, number, and palatability, it seems.

no answer on a supply place, just an interesting note on the 'weed' issue. Knowing how these little tubers can take over, we planted in an area that we didn't care if they continually came back or spread. 1st year they flourished. Next year, believe it or not, they were wiped out by the Gophers we're infested with! Not a one returned this year. Thought the artichokes would be around forever, but those little varmints are more powerful than the choke! ;)

I just ordered some from Shumways. They are $12.95 for 2 1/2 lbs, postpaid. I think they do some bulk discounting but I think the info was on the order form that I sent in with my order. I got my catalog off their website. When I requested a catalog on the website, the info there was about 2 years out of date, but the catalog came post- haste. I noticed that Jungs carried them too.
