We have some Amish folk nearby and someone was telling me that sawmills that use horses won't take walnut trees because it's bad for the horses. Has anybody heard of this? Thanks.

Walnut sawdust can cause laminitis in horses, they can absorb the toxins present in walnut sawdust through their feet. Doesn't take much walnut sawdust either.

Yup, black walnut in shavings/sawdust will cause laminitis (the old term is founder) through contact with the soles of the hoof in horses in a heartbeat.
