How to choose a metering mode on the Canon EOS 300

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I am aware that 3 metering modes are available on the Canon EOS 300: evaluative, partial and centre-weighted. I understand what each one does but (apart from partial) I don't know how I know which one is in use and how to change from one to the other on the camera. can anyone help?!

Hi

Here is how metering works in each of those creative zone modes

1. Mode P: Uses evaluative metering 2. Mode Av & Tv: Uses evaluative by default and can be shifted to partial by pressing the AE lock(*). 3. Mode M: Uses center weighted metering. And here also a partial metering can be done with the help of AE lock.

You cannot select any of this metering modes using a control button like in other high end camers. Instead this camera selects its metering mode based on its shooting mode selection. Only thing that we can do with this is by pressing the AE lock and move the metering to partial. The partial meter in this camera is 9.5% of the view finder and it is to the center.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!
