Ladies clothing question... where to find cable knit tights?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am trying to find a place I can buy/order cable (or really, any kind) knit tights for ladies. The thick sweatery type of tights that are warm, and not the nylon type tights. I found some at tights on line and they were a bit over priced. Any ideas as to where to look?

Thanks so much!

Try Lehman's, LL Bean, Vermont Country Store, Downeast Mercantile, all on web.

Life in the woods is wonderful. You'll be even more comfortable if you're well prepared for the unforeseen.

Buying is great for the short term, but this type of accessory won't be available much longer, the current scarcity should be an idication of that. I suggest you learn to knit, and make your own, so you will have just what you want/need when you want it in the future. There is a very inexpensive book put out by Dover books called Mary Thomas's Knitting book. It runs about $8.00 now, it can give you all the basics. If you are a visual learner, go with a learn to knit book with a lot of pictures instead. You will want to aim for knitting with 4 needles (this is not hard, two are just placeholders). Start by knitting heeless socks on the 4 needles, and then to heeled socks, then to tights. Good luck!

Sandie, I have never seen a pattern for tights.....is there such a thing?? I knit socks but would love to knit tights, for me and for my grandchildren. You really have me thinking now!!!

Kelly, you're my hero! I can't find them anywhere...not even for my girls. I never even though about knitting them, though...thanks for thinking to ask these brainy folks! Cara

I know that this isn't the exact answer that you're looking for but... Instead of tights, I wear silk long johns. There's not bulky under my clothes, they wash well, and they're nice to sleep in too. I got mine at JCPenney's, but I've seen then in the LLBean, Lands End, Vermont Store catalogs.

I wear the cotton knit ski-type pants, with the strap that goes over [or under] the instep. under jeans or long skirts.

REI and other backpacking outfits also carry silk underwear. If you really want to knit, you might also try knitting extra long legwarmers.

This site may have what you're looking for. They are called the Sock Company, and they seem to have everything, even the monkey doll socks.

Go to the third column (right side) and near the bottom is a category for leg warmers/arm warmers, click on that, and then you will see some cable knit ones that don't seem too expensive (Topaz, is the brand, I think). It did not state the length, and of course the size of your legs will make a difference, but you could call their number to find out what you need to know. I have not ordered from them yet, but probably will in the future.

Hope this helps.

Wow! Thank you all for your responses. I was hesitant in asking this question here because I though that no one probably cared much about the topic. But, then I thought “Most people around here have to worry about keeping warm at some time or another…”

Sandi- Thanks for all the info on knitting. I do crochet but haven’t knitted since I was a child. I have been inspired by you now to try my hand at knitting again. I would like to ask you, along with Diane, do you know of any patterns for tights off hand? Please share if you do!

Cara- it only took about two days of really searching for the tights for the light bulb to go off. I should have thought right away that if there was a place to find an answer it would probably be here! I am slow sometimes…

Diane, Carol, Michaele, Charleen, GT, I am going to check out exactly what silk long underwear looks like (I am wondering about them for jumpers), ski pants and to check out all the recommended sites.

Thanks you all so much. If I find any deals I’ll post!

Check the archives. I recently posted this same question (great minds think alike, eh?) and there were many shopping leads.

Try GVS cataloge, they have them for sizes infant up to 14-16. The toll free # is 1-800-398-24-94. I've ordered these for my DD and they are really nice and sewn together well. The colors are black, navy, white, hunter green and burgundy. Prices are $3.29 for one pair, 3 pr. for $3.19 ea. or 6 pr. for $3.09 each. Sometimes they sell out and don't order in until the next summer/fall. Hope they have them in stock, good luck
