For the first time in decades I'm having an AE-1 problem. When I advance the film, the shutter goes off. Makes camera useless, of course. Is this a complicated repair, or something I can do? Any advice/instruction/help appreciated.

I don't have much to offer; but I do know if the shutter button is stuck down then you get a similar scenario. Does a gentle (but firm) knock on a solid object help at all?

If the shutter button is stuck the red LED-numbers in the finder will be visible all the time, unless you turn the "A L S" lever to L. In that case the battary also will dry out rather fast.
