Ozone producing air purifiers (Healtth)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Does anyone out there know anything about ozone air purifiers?? We are looking at one but everything that I have found says ozone is bad!! Except of course the people selling these machines. They say it is the greatest thing in the world. We tried this thing for one day and the house did smell better (we have cats) but we also started having chest tightness and sore throats so we unplugged it. I can't find ANY information that says ozone is good. At least not any independant information. If anyone knows where I can find some rreliable information please let me know. I have already checked EPA and American Lung Association. They both say it is bad. Please help!! Thank You!

Response to Ozone producing air purifiers

The one that I have advises that all animals and people be kept out of the room where its in use and the doors be shut. The machine acts like continuous lightning strikes to purify the air.

Ozone, above a certain level is harmful. Our Alpine a switch that will cycle off the ozone if the level is too high. It also has a dial to reduce the ozone output.

Also, our daughters allergy doctor said not to use it around anyone with asthma.

We have one, and as far as it's abilities, it will remove any odor you can imagine (mildew, animal urine, cigarette smoke- even as it comes off of the cigarette).

Re: the sore throats, if it pumps out ozone without an ozone disabling switch, it shouldn't be used in a small area. You may be sensitive to it, at any level. We use one in our basement and there is so much mildew for it to clean, that you can't smell the ozone.

One thing is certain, they are expensive.

Response to Ozone producing air purifiers

Lou Ann-------I am allergic to all forms of chemicals---(lost my immune system due to working with chemicals)--& we have three air purifiers with negative ioners & they run in our home all the time. Would not live with out one----when we travel/ so goes my air purifier with negative ioner/ that is what produces the ozone!! (If we have to stay in a motel room it is the first thing pluged in----

We have one in our motor home & I have one in our car /that I plug into the cigarette lighter.

I also have a battery operated one that I can wear around my neck--- if I fly /or am in a croud /or with people who wear perfume /etc/etc/- --as I am allergic to those chemicals---

I many/ many moons ago worked for a company that sold water purifiers & air purfiers-----then we later had a natural health company & we sold them at that time-----I no longer sell them & have not for many years---but I think they are the greatest!!!!!!!!!!!

When I worked for the air purifiering company--we use to be hired out to remove smells from homes/ apts---you name it---- they worked wonderful removeing any smells----best of all is /with out chemicals & they don't mask the smell with another smell they remove it!!!!!

The worst job I had was a used car dealer /had a car that someone had died in-----it was a very expensive car----but it smelled of death---- very strongly!!!!!!!! So strongly/ when I placed the air purifiers in the car--- I told him /I really could not guarantee that it would do the job!!!! But it did!!!!!!!

My air purifier with a negative ioner is something I won't do with out-----

I sold many commercial units to hospitals & to carehomes and the like- -- by all mean check them out!!!!!!!! I have health problems from chemical poisioning/ I love my purifier--it has made all the difference in the world for me/ if I can cope/ or not be able to cope in a world that sooo many people seem to think /they have to use chemicals in order to live---& it is killing many of us!!!

I have bought an air purifier for my children & grandchildren----they are the love of my life & there is nothing I would do to harm them---- only what I believe is best for them----

There really isn't any thing I can say good enough about cleaning up your air you breath & cleaning up the water you drink!!! And growing your food as naturally as you can.

There are many brands & many prices & from small purifiers with ioners to commerical units-----they are all good for what they are intended!!! If you decide to buy one----buy the size for the job you intend it to do----best wishes---I think every family should have one along with a water purifier---we have an R.O. unit for our water--but that is a whole nother topic!!!

I also have one,[a Living Air, Alpine type] very time I turn it off I miss it, and turn it back on.(I had chronic bronchitis 18 years ago, and I am doing fine now) If you are haveing ANY discomfort the setting is too high, I also have fans running all around the house to keep it circulating. The ozone is only noticeable right in front of the box. It does a wonderful job of getting the fine dust out of the air. The dust will stick to everything - and everywhere, but it isn't in the air. I have had mine for over 8 years. I have scorched my sinuses with it being turned up too high a time or two, now I know the smell and keep it adjusted as needed with no problems.

This answer is for Ken B. who e-mailed and asked me to explain on the forum the switch on the Alpine Air Purifiers.

This description pertains to the large Alpine XL-15 for large areas, or assaulting areas with ozone that are currently or temporarily unoccupied.

The unit sits in the most frequented part of the living area of your home, near or even pointed into an air return. The switches/ controls are built into the units. They have a fan dial which controls the fan speed. This will push the ozone away from the unit faster or slower, The fan has a minimum speed.

The ozone dial controls the ozone output from quite minimal to high.

The switch you are asking about is an ozone cutoff enabling switch which will allow the machine to stop ozone production when it reaches a certain level. The switch allows you to enable ozone detection or bybass detection (which then causes constant ozone output regardless of the level).

got an ozone story for ya. one time rats found access to the crawl space where i live. i plugged the access with rock wool (and they don't like that in their mouth or on their feet) then i put d-con down there for them to eat. it worked well. how do i know? the stench of rotten rat nearly ran us out of hour house. an ozone generator cleaned up the odor in about two hours.
