Has anyone ordered chicks from Hoover's hatchery?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I've been checking around for the best prices on baby chicks/ducks, and Hoovers is the cheapest I've found so far. Has anyone ordered from them, and if so, were you pleased?

Thanks,

Elizabeth

Elizabeth, where are they located? Could you give me their web address? I've been trying to find a hatchery cheaper than McMurrays. I like McMurrays, but I heard that they are higher than most. I'm just checking around. Thanks!

It's www.hoovershatchery.com

I haven't checked on the shipping costs yet, just the per chick price. I think they are in Iowa. Can't check now, 'cause I'm on my way out the door:)

I, too, have found Hoover to be cheapest, even after figuring in postage. I also asked on this board if people had been happy with them. I'll watch your post to see what people tell you. I love the MM catalog and ordered from them several times. Always happy with my chicks but had no idea they were so expensive until I started shopping around. Good luck.

I looked at Hoover's Hatchery and thought they were a little high. I was going to order guineas and ducks from Stromberg's and chickens and geese from Welp's Hatchery because they were cheaper and shipping is included. Has anyone ordered from either of these two companies?

Ideal poultry (www.ideal-poultry.com) has free shipping to Texas. You would have to figure out total order cost to see which ends up being cheaper. I haven't bought anything from either of them, so I can't help you as far as quality.

Try Belt Hatchery in CA, had good success with them. (~$1.40 per pullet chick.) Unless you want to cull the extra cockerals, it is well worth buying all pullets. Jim

I ordered from them and got my pullets back about middle of Oct. 2001. The delivery was delayed (apparently not due to Hoover's fault) and about 50% of the order was lost, between those that arrived dead and those that died shortly after arrival. Contacted Hoover's and they immediately sent a replacement order, free of all charges, and it arrived in two days. Only lost two out of that replacement order. They stood behind their shipping guarantee with no questions or hassels. I ordered their laying reds and they seem to be good chickens.

We have used Hoover's for the past three years. They have an excellent Hi-Y Broiler that grow nice full breasts (if you like 'em that way!). We have never had a problem with them. We used PUrina Meatbuilder and limit what they eat. In 6-8 weeks we have 6-8 pound birds in the freezer. Many people want to buy them from us as they are tender and large and tasty tasty. Our local vet can order them from Hoovers also and the shipping charge is usually cheaper as they come on a truck if they get enough orders. Otherwise they have been mailed to our local post office. Hoovers used to have a special "last hatch" price in August which made it very very economical but this last fall there was no price break but we ordered 50 chicks and got 78. Only one died in transit. I think that Hoovers supply year round now. The only complaint I have is that we had to butcher the extras! We purchased some from Runnings Farm and Fleet one spring and they told us that they order them from Hoovers also and that Hoovers is the best buy for them. I will order through Hoovers again. Very satisfied here in South Dakota.

Try Mt. Healthy Hatcheries in Ohio. Not sure of web address. Just type Mt. Healthy Hatcheries in your search engine it should pull up. E-mail WWW.mthchick@one.net

Have you been to www.eggbay.com ? They have chicks, as well as eggs. Someone on this forum put in the link. Thank you! I've already ordered for this Spring! I ordered from McMurray years ago--their cornish cross were $1.10 each! I can get them locally for $ .67 ea, and no crooked toes.

I have used Hoovers & have always been very happy with the chicks. Wouldn't use any other. I always receive them on the day I should $ chicks are always healthy & clean on arrival ( that is saying something since I'm located in middle Ga).The chicks have always been the bred & sex I ordered. I would certainly recommend them.

Have you checked out this hatchery? Have not gotten birds from them but they sure are reasonable!
