On the intelligence of Neanderthals

We've already heard about how smart Z is, no need for any more.

Just out of curiosity, "thanks", what does your common sense tell you is a good measure of intelligence?

a good "measure" of intelligence??

LOL! How typically American, always thinking in terms of quantity rather than quality!

Well, if you're talking about the kind of intelligence that humans are now using (which I'm sure you are, because it's the only kind you're aware of), then I would say "less" than it took to invent the nuclear bomb would be "a good measure". In fact, a LOT less of THAT kind of "intelligence" would be more than sufficient.

Since you quibble with the word "measure", what does your common sense tell you is a good evidence of intelligence?

There is evidence of "intelligence" all around us, the destruction of the planet, the killing of our fellow man and hundreds of species of animals.

The problem with humans at this stage in their development is the ego. God gave us an innate intelligence that we are to use to survive. It comes from the ego, a tool to be used to maintain and protect our bodies. Humans have become so skilled at using this tool that they have applied it to the world around them in many different ways. The problem is that this ego intelligence is self-serving, it has no awareness of a greater purpose, service to all of humanity. So we have a created a world which pits humans against each other in competition for survival.

Humans need to put aside their desire to impress themselves and others with excessive use of their ego intelligence, and begin instead to harness the power of the Universal Intelligence (I don't even like to use the word "intelligence" because the way most humans think of it creates such negative connotations in my mind). Let us call it "Consciousness".

Our egos instinctively know when to activate our primitive intelligence for maintenance and survival purposes. We do not need to constantly activate and use this intelligence at all times as we so often do. In fact, we need to learn to turn it off. When we learn to turn off our primitive ego thoughts we will become more aware that we are all connected, and that we all share this universal consciousness which flows through all of us. Only when we allow ourselves to be guided by the knowledge we already know but are not fully aware of within this consciousness, will we be able to ensure peace and survival of humanity. To consider anything else "intelligence" is a joke because it only self-serving, not intended to be applied toward the evolution of the entire human race.

Can't quality also be measured? No all types of measurements equate to a quantitative measure.

Lars, does this mean we can't make any more neanderthal jokes?

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), January 08, 2002.

Yes, Maria, you got it. Anita once called me a "Neanderthal" because I didn't agree with her definition of male sexuality. I have ached for her ever since because I don't think she is truly a speciesist.

I hope this article helps in her sensitivity training.

Lars, I'm sure Anita used that word without thinking. We all do it sometimes. I'm positive that that was not the real Anita.

-- Peter Errington (petere7@starpower.net), January 08, 2002.

Thanks for "standing up" for me, Peter, but I used the term when Lars began discussing sexuality between males and females. I felt that his attitude toward women reflected the classic Neanderthal joke about the man clubbing the woman and dragging her off to the cave.

I don't want to pursue this, Lars.

Me neither. I ran across the article on Neanderthal intelligence and just *had* to pass it on.

Maybe someday, the sociologists will do definitve research on the mating behavior of Neanderthals. Whatever their behavior, we know it was not successful.
