Looking for sawmiller in U.P. of Michigan

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi everyone,

I've enjoyed following the various questions about sawmilling. My family owns land in the U.P. of Michigan, with about 20 acres of woodland. I'm hoping someone here knows a resource to find and locate owners of portable sawmills with the aim of harvesting timber for my use for woodworking. The amount of wood I would want to mill wouldn't justify the expense of a sawmill myself, so I'm just hoping to find someone who could do it for me. Anyone have an idea? Also, has anyone had any luck with chainsaw driven mills?

Thanks ahead of time!

I posted about Linn sawmill parts below. You could build a mill very cheap, not that the price of wood wouldn't make most mills pretty affordable fast! I'm thinking $2000 plus some steel I already have will get me a saw mill that will produce useable rough lumber. I got a chain saw mill for Xmas that is really just to square logs if you check out the Lee Valley web site they have the one I got and a more elaborate version. I do mean to try it this week. (need a new chain!) so I'll post how it worked. Could take some pictures too and try Chuck's album/link. to post.

I have an Uncle and cousin in Marquette who have their own portable sawmill and may be able to do this for you, or recommend someone who can. E-mail me separately and I'll give you the information to contact them.

James, my hubbie's folks live in Ontonagon. We hired a sawmill fella a couple years ago and made 1" x 6" board lumber. Got 4000 board feet done in a weekend. Can't recall the cost, but will find out. We hauled. We then took it to Houghton to be planed and TnG'd. Hauled it all back to New Mexico last year and are starting to put it up this month. If you Email me I can give you more information on how to contact 'the mule skinner' (nickname the Sawmill guy had).
