The D30 is very enticing, especially since a replacement D60 is heavily rumoured to be announced in 2002Q1.

The replacement for the EOS 55 is the EOS 30QD, called the Elan 7E Date in the Americas market. You can see specs and reviews and opinions and discussions at:

I cannot offer any uh, impartial, opinion about the Elan 7E :-)

First off, how about providing a meaningful subject line for your posts so people know what it's about?

Second, how about you post one specific question instead of spamming the forum with three posts asking the same basic question?

Third, have you spent a minute and looked at Canon's Web sites? Canon UK (where you appear to be from) have a page with a full lineup of their cameras:

http://www.canon-europa.com/cgi-bin/parser.pl?page=subprodtype& subprodtype=102&prodtype=40&subprodtype=40

Note that the EOS 55 is basically the Japanese version of the camera sold under the name EOS 50E in Europe. The main difference is that the 55 has a fairly useless panorama feature whereas the 50E does not.

Also, given the price of £370, I'd go for the newer EOS30, at £400.

D60? already? wow, i guess with the new digital thing going around canon will have to come out with new digital bodies almost yearly from now on.

Some people are so rude! Is it so hard to ask nicely to ask 1 big question instead of a couple specific questions. Also I do not see rules for posting! This is a shared comunity discussion.

Anyway enough ranting.

To answer your question relax your Olympus is a great camera and will do just fine untill you can afford what you want.

If I know where I want to go I usually start with lenses. They are the most important for a good picture. If you like what you have now try to replace it with EOS lenses. Keep in mind that the D30 will multiply the focal length by 1.6x this can get a little anoying when chosing lenses to swap between film and digital. In other words build your Canon system while still using your Olympus.

A film camera back up to digital is not a bad idea but set your priorities {digital or film} and look at your needs. For general photo a Rebel 2000 {starter model} or Elan series like the Elan 7 {next step up} would be fine. Or for advanced photo, photojournalism, or sports an EOS 3 would be better. All these are US models. A good source for the differences is the Canon web site.

Finally don't just jump into a change. The same stuff or better will be there just make sure you get what and what you are comfortable with the functions and feel.

Hope this helps.
