liability insurance for the small farmer

Would like input from anyone in the state of Ohio that has had experience with insurance companies dealing with liability insurance for the small holder. Is it possible to have a farm liability policy without a homeowner's policy, Thanks, Judy

I would also like to hear responses to this. I am curious as to what others do. I am also interested in insurance for selling soap.

Hi,

When I farmed in Ohio (up to 1999), we had a house in the villiage of Gambier that was provided as part of my wife's contract with Kenyon College. We rented the house out on our farm and we had a rentor's policy on our stuff in town. So we did not have any homeowners insurance at the time. The farm policy was tied into our vehicle insurance and it insured the buildings and equipment and all but not any of our contents in the house because we did not live there...our tennants had their own rentors policy. Our farm insurance covered us with any liability from our rentors and in general both on and off the farm. We carried both 500K general liability for the farm with an extra blanket umbrella of 500K or a million I just cannot recall. The renters policy was separate from the farm policy. None of this was terribly expensive.

I think the company was general casualty...I can look it up if you want. We tried nationwide first, but our agent was, well, did not meet our requirements for being classified human so after a month I found an independent agent who wanted to work for me. The more things you fold into the portfolio, the more discounts and options you can get. Still, the bottom line is that you can most certainly insure your farm separately as a business regardless.

Good luck with this. Oscar

I use Farm Family Insurance. I live in NJ but they are all over. The only thing is you have to be a memeber of Farm Family to get the insurance. I have been happy with them.
