If you are talking about a commerical unit then by all means go with a Hobart. They will last forever and have the power and versitility you need. If you are talking about light commercial or home use, then go with a kitchenaid.

In case some of you didn't know, any kitchenaid mixer will take any and all attachments that have ever been made for kitchenaid mixers since the mixer was introduced. You can have a brand new one and use attachments from the first one! If you needing attachments, check Ebay. You can save a bundle from buying new and they don't usually wearout anyway.

If you have the money, get the Kitchen-Aide mixer. Not only will you love it, but it has a variety of attachments to do just about anything you want. I've used mine to make pasta and grind meat and stuff sausage.

If you need a commercial mixer, kitchenaid just won't do. Although it is a good heavy duty mixer, it is not going to withstand commercial use.

My vote goes for the Kitchen Aid Mixer. We got our a couple of years ago and I love it. We went to Best Buy as they had a sale going on. They had a couple that were cheaper than the sale price. Mine was marked as having a chip on it. So I got it for another $25 off. To this day I and dh have not been able to find the chip. We did find a tiny scratch, but we really had to look for it. They are just great mixers and the last forever now I want to get some more attachments for it.

Hobart originally made KitchenAid products. They sold it off a while back. My KitchenAid mixer is 23 years old and I wouldn't make bread without it. It is a real workhorse.

I agree! KitchenAid is fabulous, and also, they do carry a grain grinder attachment which I love and works great - but you rarely see any pictures of it so you may have to ask.

I too have a kitchenaid. 17 years ago it cost what they cost now. Mine was made by Hobart. Kitchenaids are now made by Whirpool. Maybe the lower cost is because of more units made, maybe it is because some corners were cut. But back to the question. What SIZE mixer do you need 5 quart, 10, 40? Most of the posters to date are refering to a 5 quart model.

I was in the same situation last fall. I ended up with a Bosch. Much stronger motor, and no plastic gears to wear out. The top-of-the-line KA are now all metal gears, but the ones under 375/425watt have plastic.(That's why the older ones are still going strong..they had metal insides!) I researched for months before deciding. The price is comparable to a good Kitchenaid. It will handle dough for multiple loaves of bread, also, when KA gets sort of stuck. There is a new mixer out, called "Dimension 2000" which is similar to Bosch, and has a lifetime warranty. Both can be viewed at http://www.healthforyou.com That is where I hot mine from and got a great deal.

Happy shopping! Jody

I learned that only partially softened sticks of butter stopped my new 525 watt Kitchen Aid Stand mixer. It seems the motor still runs but the beater does not. The machine has a 'Shear Pin' not unlike those on outboard motors when the propeller hits an obstruction, it shears-off. The task to disassemble and replace was about an hour and since Kitchen Aid has no repair manuals I had to do it by ear and put back a pin that will never shear off. The upside is I didn't wait for a repair or replacement, and there will never be a stick of butter to stop my new stand mixer ever again.

I also noticed the term 'PROFESSIONAL' used on the mixer and all over its carton, but the bottom of the box says " Household Use Only". The term "Professional" is evidently just an advertising claim.

Does that mean that the newer makes of Kitchenaid are not up the standards of the old kitchenaids? I am looking also for a new mixer as my old Sunbeam is about gone. But if I am investing a couple of hundred in a mixer, I'd like to make sure it will last as long as my Sunbeam (over 10 years).
