SAL Q-3 front end

A Seaboard Air Line Q-3 2-8-2 steam locomotive had two "flying" air pumps mounted on the smokebox front. A very distinctive framework of tubing ran across the boiler front above the pumps, extending beyond the pumps on both sides. Any ideas of what this was for?
