LOL!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

Someone in site design over at www.mame.net has a real sense of humor. Considering the amount of fighting here lately, i suppose it's somewhat appropriate.

Cheers, QCN

Answers

(Seriously) I am humourously impaired, ask a lot of people. What exactly is funny about it?

Ummm, I don't get it either. What the dilly yo?

me in the clueless stable as well. the new mame official site design looks nice but it's a lot less usable, i have to do twice as many clicks to get what i want out of that site now, not that i care or not that that's all that funny. (yeah! three "that"s in a runon sentance!)

-- Chad (churritz@crash.cts.com), January 02, 2002.

Actually, there are four ;P

-- Joe Ledesma (JoeyL21988@yahoo.com), January 02, 2002.

Well, at least you three can admit you didn't get it. C'mon, didn't ANYONE here notice anyhting unusual? I would have thought JoustGod or BenJos for sure...

Man. This site is either full of philistines or illiterates.

Damn, I hope I'm a Philistine...

-- Tenchi (rpeng@usc.edu), January 03, 2002.

Guess that you are talking about that "ring" at the MAME logo...

-- Aragorn II (angelo.salese@tin.it), January 03, 2002.

Yea, I noticed the ring before, but didn't take much 'notice' to it. i still don't see what's so funny.

-- Joe Ledesma (JoeyL21988@yahoo.com), January 03, 2002.

Has it anything to do with the link to the Japanese-translated version of their page? "Bridge Across The Cultural Divide"...?

Thank-you Angelo. You've restored my faith. The others here seem to be bound by darkness... :)

OH W0W D00DZ THEY HAX0RED TEH MAME LOGO SO IT'S GOT A RING FROM LORD OF THE RINGZ LOLZ KEKEKEKEKEKEKE!!!!!!!!1111

-- TeamAki (lordbbh@aol.com), January 04, 2002.

sadly, all you do with that post is show your own ignorance and failure to get the joke, BBH. if it was really a matter of them posting a ring because of a popular movie coming out, then it would be pretty lame. that ain't it, and whoever made that adjustment was pretty damn clever for thinking of it.

anyway, i guess this isn't really funny any more now. sorry to bother y'all.

-- Q.T.Quazar (qan@home.com), January 04, 2002.

Alls I'm sayin is that putting a ring in the logo isn't really much of a "joke". And I don't see what relevance it has to the "fighting" here... unless some of us are Hobbits

BTW, Barry says the logo's been like that for three weeks now.

-- TeamAki (lordbbh@aol.com), January 04, 2002.

Actually, upon checking, it's more like two weeks ago. But it's still a while ago.

-- Barry Rodewald (bsr@hnpl.net), January 04, 2002.

right. the joke pokes fun at what MAME does, at who its author (really) is, and in particualr, its relation to other emulators in the emulation community, particularly with MAME's tendency to 'amalgamate' games that other emulators used to be the sole source to play on.

if you've read Lord of the Rings, you know why...

-- Q.T.Quazar (qan@home.com), January 04, 2002.

This makes more sense if you make references to Stephen R. Donaldson and/or Thomas Covenant than if you make LOTR references...

-- dissolute city (mdenham@coinet.com), January 04, 2002.

uh, no. those works are derivative of Tolkien, as is most modern-day fantasy. i'm really amazed how many people here obviously haven't read the books. i thought they would be obvious requisites for fantasy geeks (since unless you feel like reading middle english poetry, they were the first modern fantasy), but it seems like my presumption is just making me look more and more ignorant.

the quote on Sauron's One Ring, for what it's worth is: "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them", but if you haven't read the books, you won't get the subtleties beyond that. anyway, it seems only Angelo has actually read the books, so I guess no-one is really going to get why MAME wearing the One Ring is a very clever comment.

an apology to all those i've offended along the way. i really did think more people had read LOTR and were just being obstinate.

-- Q.T.Quazar (qan@home.com), January 04, 2002.

Ummm... no. The bad assumption was that no one who had ever read the books could possibly look at at a mame logo with a ring around it and NOT think "Aaah, the one ring of Sauron, who attempted to bring elves, dwarves and humans under his dominion, of course that's an analogy of MAME bringing games from Neo-Geo, CPS2 etc. How clever!"

Not everyone thinks the same. Doesn't mean you have to throw insults around.

-- Tenchi (rpeng@usc.edu), January 04, 2002.

I still think the analogy to the white gold ring in the Chronicles Of Thomas Covenant is better... rather than bringing all these things under an evil power's dominion, just an amalgamation of things into one more powerful force.

-- dissolute city (mdenham@coinet.com), January 04, 2002.

Er,my MARP name is Kale;
besides I can't ever believe that so many people hasn't yet read Lotr...

-- Kale@team"Frodo,gimme the ring!" (angelo.salese@tin.it), January 04, 2002.

Hmm...it seems that LOTR is back in fashion .Grief....

I`ll quote a verse from a UK indie band , from 1986-ish, when LOTR books seemed to be quite popular . And strangely , after all these years , yet popular again.

Here goes...

" Mention the Lord of The Rings just once more and I`ll more than likely kill you...

More Cock , more cock , Michael Moorcock you fervently moan . Is this a Wok that you`ve shoved down my throat , or are you just pleased to see me ?

Brian Moores' head looks uncannily like London Planeterium "....

( Half-man Half Biscuit , " Dickie Davis Eyes " , circa 1986 )

Maybe Ben Jos would have... if he read this board with any regularity. :-P

Cheers, Ben Jos.

-- Ben Jos Walbeehm (walbeehm@walbeehm.com), January 04, 2002.

Only one in the modern fantasy had write his books before Tolkien. Howard is great but I prefere JRR Tolkien. For the ring on mame.net, its a gold ring. So its The One, not the marry ring of Thomas Covenant...

Very unfunny was the "ending" of the movie, like watching Dallas or something. You would think that 3 hours is long enough time to have even some kind of ending. Star Wars at least was a trilogy with independent movies. How can I wait for a year for next "episode"? Easily, it was such a crap movie: Too childish for adults, too violent for children, no decent plot! and characters were not interesting enough. Maybe book is a classic, but movie suckfs.

Then again there is allways new MAME-beta release to wait for, you suckers ;)
