What's everyone talking about???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I have noticed some reference to Pakistan and India here and also several post at Country Side. What is exactly going on? I do not watch the news much and have no idea what everyone is getting worried about. Should I be getting worried or preparing for something?

India and Pakistan have had a dispute over a small area that is between them- for the life of me I can not remember the name, is it Kashmir? Since the whole thing with Usama Bin Laden has been going on, their dispute has gotten worse. They are actually fighting physically, now, more than they have in the past (Pakistan's belief we'll support them as part of their having helped us, however slightly, in our war?), and some people are afraid that one or both of these countries will use nuclear arms in this battle, as they have both demonstrated their possession of and capability to use these weapons. From what I've read on CS, some people may be concerned that should these countries do the unthinkable, that we may have fallout here. As one person responded to that post, this is unlikely as they are on the other side of the world and we did not experience effects from Nagasaki or Hiroshima. Hope I helped.

All of that is correct but does not go far enough. India has said that it will use nuclear weapons if they feel the need. They have been massing military and tanks at the borders and moving missiles into place. Pakistan has been making similar moves and has said they will also use whatever they need to. Not only is there fear of fallout here, and I'm one who is not sure that will happen, but the larger fear is that other countries will be drawn into the conflict and we will end up with a major, possibly world, war. One in which nuclear weapons may be fired at other countries too. Timebomb2000.com has an India/Pakistan thread that updates you every day with what is going on. Also, a MidEast thread with what's happening there if you want to keep up with world news.

Just curious, Is there any one out there, who knows what to do, if there was radio active fallout? I know there was all kinds of trouble from the cherynoble{ can"t spell it} power plant in Russia. How would it affect our milk? How much radio active fall out would we get in this country if they nuke each other in India and Pakistan? Would the Jet stream over the USA , have any thing to do with the amount carried in the air? Love Irene

What I've heard this morning is that tensions are easing a bit though apparently armies are massed on both sides of the border. India and Pakistan have been at each others throats for years-although this has escalated, it is not a totally new situation. While I don't want to take a totally ostrich attitude, right now, I'm much more concerned about a probable snowstorm than Pakistan and India.

But what do I know?
