Photoshop, PhotoCD opening as negatives...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Large format photography : One Thread

Have a PC and Photoshop is opening the CD's (4x5 scans on Kodak photo CD's) as negatives in Photoshop. I got a message about choosing a source & destination but can't find info about it. I completely removed Photoshop & reinstalled and still have the problem. Anyone know what to do to fix it. And, before the Mac crowd starts in with 'buy a MAC', I have had 4 & all 4 died within 2 weeks of plugging them in. I have better, but still lousy luck with a PC.(on the 3rd hard drive this year & the main backup stuff on Zip died with 'the click of death' which ruined the zip drive & a few other zip disks as well... computers & I aren't really a good match, nothing like the old Deardorff which is much easier & more dependable)

Any information would be appreciated. I change "modes" and it makes no difference, still comes up as a negative.

Photoshop has never been good at managing PhotoCD ... do yourself a favour and have a look at Picture Window 3.1 instead (www.dl-c.com). This sleek piece of software has been written with the photographer in mind, is inexpensive, you can use it instead of Photoshop or to complement its functionality, and has GREAT PhotoCD support among a host of other features ... it only needs a Linux version to be perfect IMHO.

Dan, were the images scanned as negatives in the first place ?? If so, you need to convert to color in PS. "Modes" will not help you, that will just change a file to greyscale or RGB.

Four computers died on you within two weeks ???!!!

On your third hard drive within twelve months ???!!!

Dead ZIP Drives ???!!!

Man, you've got the WORST luck with computers of anyone on this planet !!! Hope you have better luck in '02. Regards, Mike

Dan,

Photoshop is actually very good at dealing with Photo CD files - I have dealt with several thousand of them.

First, it depends what version of PS you are using - earlier versions used a kodak plugin.

Later versions have it built in.

Full details are at:

Also, if your original was a negative, it may come out as a negative. If it wasn't, email me and we'll see if we can figure it out. BUT to convert the negative, once opened in Photoshop, just go Select>All, then
