Yeah--what SHE said!

Except we shall try to stay up to see how bad the gunfire is at midnight :) It's a family tradition.

And the Weather Channel says we shall have snow on THursday--whoopee!

I might make it to 10 pm. Will tape the ball dropping for viewing in the morning.

My room is coming along well. Today I found that I had paint in my undies, so time to take a break. (;

Happy New Year and all that!

Happy New Year ! !

We are going to go and hear a friend play guitar at the little bar here in town, but I know I won't make it until midnight - I never do.

(I take that back I did for Y2k rollover :) )

beckie, I think that's the one that cured me of staying up. ;^)

That plus no point in listening to the top 40 countdown, I wouldn't recognize any of the music these days. :(

My best wishes to everyone for happiness in the coming year.

I'm not going to stay up until midnight. The big ball is going to have to fall without me. Since I retired, I've turned into a real sackrat, as we used to say in college.

OG, DH and I just celebrated our 15th on the 27th....

-- Anonymous, December 31, 2001

Cool, Beckie! The 27th was Sweetie's birthday!

Now for y'all:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days o' lang syne?

Chorus
For auld lang syne, my Dear
For auld lang syne
We'll tak a cup o kindness yet
For auld lang syne

And surely ye'11 be your pint-stowp
And surely I'll be mine
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne
For auld lang etc

We twa hae run about the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine
But we've wandered mony a weary foot
Sin auld lang syne
For auld lang etc

We twa hae paidlet i' the burn
Frae morning sun sill dine
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne
For auld lang etc

And there's a hand, my trusty feire
And gie's a hand o' thine
And we'll tak a right gude-willie waught
For auld lang syne
For auld lang etc

Auld Lang Syne Translated

Should old friends be forgotten
and never remembered
Should old friends be forgotten
and the days they shared together

Chorus
For days now in the past, my dear
For days now in the past
We'll drink a toast of kind remembrance
For days now in the past

You can pay for your pint tankard
and I will pay for mine
We'll drink a toast of kind remembrance
For days now in the past

We two have run about the hillsides
and pulled wild daisies
but now we are far apart in distance
From those days now in the past

We two have paddled in the stream
from morning untill noon
but oceans now lie between us
since those days now in the past

So take my hand, my trusty friend
and give me your hand
and we will take a hearty drink together
In memory of those days now in the past

Happy New Year, friends! I hope 2002 brings more of the same for those who are doing well, and improved circumstances for those who are not. . .

All y'alls really are a wonderful bunch of people. . .

And OG...Happy Anniversary to you and Sweetie!

Oh hell, Brooke, you beat me for first post of the new year. I was sure that I would win that honor.

-- Anonymous, January 01, 2002

I'm alive. Best wishes to all.

congrats OG & Sweetie!!

glad you're home safe, Barefoot!

Best to all! May 2002 be safe, happy, and prosperous!

Today I start on the wooden floors in my room. . . Oh, joy (not). They'll get a light scraping to get off the rubber that stuck from the last rubber-backed carpet. With luck, I'll be able to cut and lay the new carpet today. (:

Meemur, when I bought the house I just moved out of, in '78, it had wall to wall because that was the thing. Recently I threw out all the rugs, refinished the hardwood floors, and have gotten ooh's and ah's since then.

I realize that this tidbit of information may not fit your circumstances.

I intentionally chose a house with all hardwood and vinyl cuz I had developed a nasty allergy to something and didn't want to deal with wal-to-wall being a potential problem. Yes, I realize I could have redone the floors, but at the time it was easier for me to do it this way.

More recently I tackled the three-season porch. Actually, a poor excuse for wall-to-wall there. I had a good, wool replacement rug for it. Not much time, because the wood stove was due to arrive, and unlikely to be moved again to accommodate a rug laying.

Taking up the rug was easy enough, and very satisfying considering its condition. The replacement rug was one that had been rolled up since my parents had it cleaned 20 years before. I never did get all the kinks out of it. And there was rotted bird seed in the center of it. I think insects carried it in, not enough room for a rodent.

And I dutifully measured once and cut twice. Oops!

Other than that, it was very satisfying. And I had already replaced all the screens (took a while to figure that one out) and done some other things to transform that room. The only one that really needed work.

I love hardwood floors! But they aren't practical in this house: I have a crawl space, not a basement, and without carpeting, it's just too cold on the floors, especially on a day like this when the outside temperatures are zero. ):

This is very slow work today. I'm dog sitting and said hound will have to be locked in the bathroom for an hour if I expect to get anything done. I'll run him at the park before I do that. (:

The guy who does the Home Improvement column, James Dulley, I think, had a piece a couple of weeks ago, talked about underfloor heating. Apparently, they have it now so that you can retrofit in a crawl space, even put it under rugs and carpets. It would be wonderful for a nice hardwood floor. (Of course, we all know the Romans invented this kind of central heating, except they used hot water pipes in the floor, not electric cables.)

-- Anonymous, January 01, 2002

Yeah, I know there's stuff that can be done to the crawl space. Not in the budget this year. I picked up a piece of 8 x 10 light brown kanga-back (rubber backed) for $79 -- can't touch crawl space heating for that, not to mention the time messing with installing the system. I wouldn't use this type of carpet if I had heavy traffic, but it'll go 7 - 9 years the way I live, plus I don't have to cut a pad or stretch it.

But I agree with you hardwood floor lovers! They're a lovely feature. Perhaps the next time that I do a whole-sale painting + redecorating project, I'll go that route. In the meantime, they're protected.

I was thinking just one room with underfloor heating might attract some of the cats away from the bed. . . Oh well, must buy a couple more heating pads.
