greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We are trying to change a thermostat on a 1991 Ford Escort LX, and we can't find the old one on the car, (it's supposed to be near the radiator). Anyone know WHERE it is and HOW we change it??? We allready have the new one.

Marty, pull the top hose off and see if its there. Sometimes they mount top hose at the engine, could even be in the hose. I am not familiar with this car so I am just estimating. You could call the parts place and ask ;>)It should just be a remove and replace job, very carefully note the old one as it comes out and put the new one in the same way. Good Luck

Marty, I did some double checking and from what I can tell there will be a "cap" that the top hose uses to connect to the engine. Remove the hose end at the engine and two or three bolts should hold the "cap" on. Remove the bolts and there it should be. Again ; note which side is up and place the new one the same way, don't forget to change the gasket. HTH

I first must say that the following input is strictly from memory, and I am totally unsure, so go to the nearest library, they should have a Chiltons or Motors manual to show how to change this part. If memory serves me correct, the housing on the Ford 4 cylinders is made of aluminum, and can be damaged easily. Be careful not to tighten either side too tight or tighten one side before tightening the other. I use the method of three turns on the nut, three turns on the next nut, etc. I changed a thermostat on a Tempo, and it was on the side of the motor, unlike the GM makes, which places the thermostat on top of the motor. You might need a ten inch extention for your socket. Change the gasket, and dont forget which way the thermostat goes in. You will need to add more antifreeze as well.

I beleive it's on the intake manafold maybe ? {sp} look on the motor it's there some where .Follow the rubber hose from the radtiator to the motor and you should find it there.

We have a 1993 Ford Escort LX and hubby has changed the thermostat. If he is recalling it correctly . . . the thermostat is located in the front on the passenger side of the engine. Follow the top radiator hose to the engine and it will be "right there". It has two (maybe three) bolts to be removed. You will need to replace a gasket for the themostat as well. Watch carefully how you remove the thermostat so you can replace the other one correctly.

Hope this helps.

Call NAPA or some similar parts store and ask them.
