Vivitar 100-300 on EOS300

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I own an EOS300 (i think itīs a great camera) and the 28-80 zoom that came as a "kit". Recently i bought a VIVITAR 100-300 f5.6 zoom and since the firts shots iīve been having problems with it: - Sometimes, when you try to take a photo and press the shutter release, the mirror raises but the shutter remains closed. - Sometimes, when you try to focus, you find that the diaphragm is closed to the minimum aperture, so the AF system can not focus. Is there any kind of known problem with non-CANON lenses? Iīve been trying to contact VIVITAR, but it seems they donīt want to hear from me. What can i do? Thanks in advance.

This is fairly typical of the incompatibilities between Canon bodies and non-Canon lenses. The best solution is to trade the lens in for a proper canon lens. Failing that, you need to have the lens "re- chipped", which would be done by Vivitar. If they don't want to hear from you, keep trying, and talk to the shop you bought the lens from. If there's still no movement from them, you might be able to bring a case for goods being sold that are unfit for their purpose, and do not work as advertised.

You may consider returning that lens for a Canon. You can get a Canon 75-300mm lens for about $160 or you might be able to find one for less on ebay. I have had good experiences with Sigma lens, but the image quality and speed of focus sometimes are not as good as the Canon. With lens, the more the lens cost, probably the better the lens. I hope this helps.
