do i have to short all three contacts for the shutter to release? or only 1 and 3? can i keep the shutter open for bulb exposures by keeping the contacts shorted (via a toggle switch?)

it looks like you have to short all three contacts together (although with a quick experiment you can check this). and yes, if you're on bulb mode, the shutter will stay open as long as you keep the contacts shorted together.
