What is Poe's fascination with the orangutan? (ourang-outang)

In Hop-Frog and the Murders in the Rue Morgue, he used ourang-outangs. Is there some signifigance in this?

The Orangutan has very little significance beyond the fact that it is foreing to the king and his court. Obviously the king has no idea what an orangutan is. The Baltimore Zoo was recently started, at the same time period of this story. Try researching that. Maybe they had an orangutan
