Canonet GL17 Loose Barrel

Does anyone have experience of slight movement on lens barrel of Canonet GL17? I think this could affect sharpness at wider apertures and I would like to fix it. Any suggestions on sequence of dismantling?

Am I right in assuming you mean the QL17 "Quick Load" rangefinder? If so, the book "Camera Maintenance & Repair, Book 2, Advanced Techniques" by Thomas Tomosy (1997 Amherst Media, Inc, PO Box 586, Buffalo, NY 14226, $29.95 list, ISBN 0-936262-58-3) discusses the dismantling, repair, and reconditioning of the QL25 and notes Canon's other full-size Canonet models are similar. Sorry, I don't know the rangefinders as well as I hope to, (eventually). I'm putting one on my wish list, though.

My Canonet QL 17 has the slight movement also. It doesn't seem to affect sharpness - but I'm not very particular about that stuff either.

It's possible for the focusing helical to be a little sloppy, but more likely that the 4 screws that attach the shutter assembly to the body are loose. These can be reached by peeling back the leather on both sides of the lens and then removing the access panels under the leather. two of the screws can be seen in the photo at the bottom of this page: http://members.tripod.com/rick_oleson/index-30.html

it's pretty common for these screws to work loose.
