Looking for plans for a firewood storage box

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Yes, I know it sounds pretty simple. It's just a box and I have something in mind, but need to have plans. My dad has volunteered to construct a wood box for our kitchen woodstove. His heart is in the right place, but he wasn't ever very good at doing puzzles. Plans would help tremendously. I'd like a rectanglar box with a hinged lid. Not exactly a trunk, but something a little taller with the lid on an angle, sloping towards the front. Maybe something like an old-fashioned feed bin that you'd find in an old barn. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance

You just might be lucky enough to find a wooden apple crate that they use in supermarkets to display and sell apples from. We have had ours for a number of years and they are about 3feet around square. We just put a board on top as a lid and slide it over when getting wood. Even have used one as a chicken pen for baby chicks in the barn. They work great but I have not been able to find any wooden ones lately...all cardboard boxes now. Maybe with some luck you can find one. Happy Holidays !!

We used to use one of those half whiskey barrel things that people buy for landscaping...to put plants in and such...they are big and round and you can stand several pieces of stove wood up in them....but they are heavy if you want to dump out the bark and stuff from the bottom...we keep the wood for the heater on the screened in back porch now instead of inside the house because that is better on our allergies...there is a door right by where the heater is so that's really convenient...but the wood is really making a mess on the porch so we've got to make a box or get another half barrel or something for there...let us know what you decide on!
