Shumway seeds and mangle beet seedsgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread |
Does anyone know if Shumway seeds is still in business? Their website has not been updated since last year, so I wasn't sure. I wanted to get some mangle beet seeds, and I don't know of any other place that sells them. Does anyone else know of someplace?

I just got back from the mail box with a new catalog Veseys, again beets but not the one you are looking for. www.veseys.com ; could these beets have a different name?

Mitch, I've never heard of them called by any other name, but I have seen them spelled mangel beets or mangle beets. They are a large beet designed as livestock feed. If anyone knows where I can get seeds, I'd love to have some for next year. If I can't find them, my goats love regular beets so I'll grow them.

Google says Gurneys or Jungs.

Mangle beets are also called stock beets. They are a good root crop if you have a mind to use them with livestock. I grew some to chop up and give to chickens. I left a few in the garden, for a seed crop next year. We will see if they go to seed. The company I ordered from is out of business. Gurneys is also out of business I understand. I know mangles can get larger than mine did, as I did not thin enough, but they were still quite huge. :o) If my mangles go to seed I will mention it here. Good luck.
