Jeff is right. Have you tried pushing it?

okay that makes sense, it makes everything dark, so i suppose it's showing me what the image will look like with the aperture i'm using? correct? I think i got it figured out.

thanks

i suspect whether you are right. though i have a manual neither do i understand the significance of this button. after reading your question i have asked a question about how does the DEPTH OF PREVIEW BUTTON helps you in understanding the actual depth which is suppose to be achieved on the film.

The button puts the aperture at the setting it will have when you take the picture. If it "makes everything dark", that's because the aperature has closed to (for example) f11, allowing less light to pass through the lens and viewfinder to your eye. If you set your aperature at its widest and press the DOF button, you'll see no difference. As the name suggests, it simply allows you to preview your depth of field pefore you make the image. This can be difficult with small apertures because the lack of light makes it hard to see the image.
