Announcement! : LUSENET : Anarchy Again : One Thread

For those of you that dont know, soon you will have to register to post on Lusenet. You will have to give an E-mail address. A real one. And I dont think we will be able to change our names or nothing. So when this all happens think hard about the name you register with because youre stuck with it. (sorry Julie) All this is Phil (God) Greenspuns idea. I dont know of any other security measures being taken but this will keep people from posting as other people. And maybe keep some of the haters out. I would like opptions to change to look of the site but that isnt happening I dont think.

Oh, and I just started 1984! Jumpoff Joe, from the little Ive read so far you were right. That shit is scary! Big Brother is watching!

-- Tator (you@cant.resist), December 17, 2001

I will come up with an all encompassing big name. I have 1984 and I did start it but I just remembered that I have it. I have been given 4 video tapes and another book to read. I'll get there. I'll wait and see what this Phil does to eliminate all the idiot posings. I was thinking about leaving. I thought I got kicked out for a couple days. Maybe I did and they let me back in. Why did Dark Phoenix change to Nexar? Why do people change like that? That person likes the letter "x" like Malcolm did. I went hiking with a global positioning system yesterday. Careful with those, they can get you lost. I went down to the city and looked at that terrorism building carnage. I saw dinoasaur bones standing up big at the natural history museum. I saw polar bears in central park. I think my boss wants me as her girlfriend maybe. It is freezing rain here. We are pink spot on national weather map. I have to run around today and finish up obligations so I don't have to worry about christmas anymore. Two of my closest friends are writers. I just noticed that. I sit in life by literary people. Tator Toes is like an ex but functioning internet friend writer but who says bad things sometimes. I am tolerant of him though. He is troubled but has good brain transmissions. Libertarianism would require that we deal with each other on a more personal level I think, and to pick and choose more how we are, instead of watching the government do whatever for us. More/less individual accountability or and less large scale uptakings, like interstate travel systems and safety regulatory mandatories that hid in complex law books. You could be a much better person or a much worse person. More freedom. More dicey world. I have bad cough and when I cough cough hard I pee my pants. Now why is that happening. I have good strong bladder. Holds far more than other people's for longer periods, but now when empty mostly I leak when having coughing attack. Oh well. I need a diaper when sick maybe. I am drinking coffee and trying to wake up so I can go out into cold world and ride around doing my thing. Have to go on cold walk by river too with my dog. Brrr. I have seven pairs of excellent outdoor winter boots. I have no use for indoor dress up winter boots. I asked my supervisor/friend yesterday, when we were doing out hiking, if I was butchy or femme and she said that I am androgonous, in the middle, depending on my circumstance. She said yesterday that I was butchy with my red NYC FD baseball cap and hiking attire. Plus I was smoking cigars. At the ptsd training I was in a red and black flowery dress with high boots and make up. I think I was femme then. She says I am guarded and that she will figure me out. I asked her lots of questions about her girlfriend like who make the most noise in lovemaking, and who has most orgasms, and who does what, and she wouldn't answer me, yet. I get nosy sometimes. I think she wants to break up with her eight year house mate. See this is part of my life now. I am still waking up.

Like your thoughts in this Place.Where the esiest place to find a good history of you debates. As I see you are aware there seems to be an awful lot of people that abuse the hell out of eachother to no awail.

Lemme know how you like 1984.

Julie, drink lots of coffee; it will help. Like it will help you pee your pants easier. Seriously, sorry you're ill!

maybe give up the cigars for a while. She won't think less of you, and your cough might get better faster.

-- joj (jump@off.c), December 17, 2001.

It aint the coffee. I will quit the cigars anyhow. What happened to Rita Hill? JOJ your address got shorter.

-- (, December 18, 2001.

-- Damn Straight (stop@and.think), December 19, 2001.

No one was cut off. Greenspun was down for 36 hours. Nobody could get in.

-- Tator (you@cant.resist), December 19, 2001.

heck, even I couldn't get in.....

-- Davey Rootbeer (, December 19, 2001.

JOJ your address got shorter. Everything gets shorter around here this time of year. The humidity, perhaps. what's your excuse?Your addy gets long, short, long, short...

Where's Rita, you ask? I'm clueless. I heard a rumor he/she was heading for europe, but it's only a rumor. They DO have cybercafes in europe, btw. I know this for sure. I've corresponded with wife/kids/friends in this fashion.

-- joj (jump@off.c), December 20, 2001.

tator, where'd you hear about this password stuff? I'm moderator on another forum, and Phil baby never told me about it...

-- joj (jump@off.c), December 21, 2001.

I am a mod as well...never was mentioned....

-- Davey Rootbeer (, December 21, 2001.

It was on the main greenspun page before it went down. I dont know if it is still there. What is your other forum? You dont want any crazed Anarchists coming there?

-- Tator (you@cant.resist), December 21, 2001.

Actually, no, I don't. It's the forum for a citizen's council, and i'd just as soon not have to password protect it.

If you find more about the password notice, I'd like to know.

And I quote:

"I'm currently trying to figure out how to redesign these services so that

1.users are authenticated, e.g., before posting they have to register and respond to an email message (we won't know who they are but at least we'll know that they supplied an email address where they can receive mail)

2.a person is available to handle service inquiries

3.a programmer is available to provide enhancements based on user needs

4.the site is financially self-sustaining, i.e., either the owners of bboards or the most active posters are contributing to the costs of sysadmin, programming, hosting/bandwidth, and customer service

When these services were built in the mid-1990s it made a lot of sense. Running a database-backed Web server was an esoteric art that required expensive hardware and proprietary software. But as we enter the year 2002 there are quite a few 14-year-olds who've set up Linux, Postgres, and OpenACS in less than one day. With a $500 PC and a DSL line, they end up having all the collaboration tools that dotcoms spent $10 million to construct.

Bottom line: prepare for some changes to these services!
