Interview by Phildelphia Inquirer

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

A staff writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer just interviewed me about Christian poetry (since I write and edit Head in the Clouds), as background for a Christian poetry slam they're having in that city tonight. The article is supposed to be published Dec. 23, and the writer says she'll send me a copy of the article and its web link. So if you live around Philly, you might be interested in the slam. I asked for a link to my site, so it might help the hits -- hope, hope.

What is a slam?

Help us out here, Randal! What's a slam???? Surely it means something different there than it does here in KS. In Kansas, it means saying something BAD about a person or thing. Like, if my hubby were to make some disparaging remark about the size of my hind quarters.... that would be a slam. And then I'd say something about his lack of hair.... that would be a slam. And then there might even be a smack down! (Not really - DH and I get along amazingly wonderfully well! Just kidding and showing an example.)

So..... What's a Christian Poetry Slam????

Yesterday I was not able to access Lusenet. Today I was gone all day to Sao Paulo; had a board meeting of our national training program. Got back to Sao Jose and went directly to a meeting tonight. Hit the door, took a shower, Joel announced my Mom was on the messenger, and we chatted a bit. 11:30 p.m. here now! Whew! What a day, good one though.

Okay, a poetry slam. From what the reporter told me it's a contest. People read or recite their poetry and the audience judges it by the clapping or reaction given. Apparently, slam comes from the audience reaction. The reporter seemed to think it was a nightclub-type activity, but as Christian poets don't think that's an appropriate place for their art, in Philly they apparently had their own event. That's the best I can come up, putting bits and pieces together. Hope that's helpful.

I'm off to bed! Tomorrow comes quickly.
