EOS-300 and 30

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

i've heard that the AF speed of EOS-300 is comparable to EOS-30,is it true? Could anyone comment on the comparison? Also, does the lens or the body play a more important role,or both, in AF performance? thanks

There's really two parts to AF.

1. The body has to decide what it's focussing on and send this information to the lens. The EOS30 is better at this than the 300 all things being equal (ie in good light - the EOS30 isn't a stellar performer in very low light).

2. The lens receives the focussing distance from the body and moves to that distance. Lenses with USM motors are much faster than those with micro motors.

Having said all that, a USM lens on an EOS300 may be faster than an EOS30 with a non-USM lens! But with the same lens I'd say the EOS30 is faster. You're correct in saying both play an important role.

EOS 30 offers Eye control focus, mirror lock, flash exposure compensation and better built.

Eos 300 offers light weight and smaller size. You can bring it almost everywhere without attracting much attention because of its novice appearance. Also a smaller price tag.

AF speed for EOS 30 and EOS 300 are depending more on the lens aperture than the body. A f1.8 lens will definately AF faster than a f5.6 lens, and f1.8 USM will be faster than a f1.8 lens.

Both will lost their AF at f8 (f4 plus 2X tele_con), unless the EV is very high.

Choose whatever suits you better.
