Hi Jack, There is a book out by a guy name of Daniel Mack, I think it's called "Making Rustic Furniture". I found it at my local library or you can probably find it for sale on Amazon.com or somewhere. It's a pretty well circulated book. I've been doing that kind of work for almost twenty years now and it is kind of addicting once you get into it. I guess the best way to get started is to make something small, like a chair or an end table, that will give you some ideas as to how things fit together. Plus if you screw something up at least it's a small thing. Hope that helps. Steve

To fulfill all your needs for this project visit the Lee Valley Tools website. They have a book (a 1907 reprint on how to make Rustic Furniture), a video, tenon cutters for power drill or brace and bit.

Here's the site www.leevalley.com

At the main page look under Woodworking. Then select drilling. Under this subheading click on Veritas Tenon Cutter. There you will find everything you need.

I have dealt with Lee Valley for some time now and their products are top notch and service is excellent.

Cheers,

Sean

OK go to www.rockler.com they have all the tools for making log furniture at reasonable prices. They also have kits. They are from Medina MN. I think you can order their catalog on line.

Stan, do you have the tenon cutters from lee valley tools? I've just ordered a couple of them for husbands christmas gift. I'd love to know if they work good, cos I've got loads of projects lined up for him!!

Sorry, I think my other post should have been directed to Sean.

To Carol:

Sorry I do not have the tenon cutters, but as I've said, LV tools tend to be very good quality. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Chairs, (I mean "Cheers"),

Hello Jack,

I personally believe that the tenon cutters are overpriced and way too expensive for most crafters. I cut all my tenons by hand and it really is not that difficult. I tried it first with a drawknife but then fould out that it was best and quicker to use a hatchet (small axe). I make the furniture all the time and believe me it is a fun way to make some extra money.

If you still want to purchase tenon cutters for your rustic furniture making you can now find a set of them on Ebay.com I saw them last night. There was about five or six of them of different sizes. The last bid was $230 something. That is a pretty good price as I see them in Lee Valley Catalong for around $100 each.

Sincerely,

Ernest

Check your library! I found a video at our local library on getting started making Rustic Furniture. It showed how to make a loveseat and a plant stand. I have since completed a loveseat and a chair and am hooked on this craft. Now, I surf the web, getting ideas at websites which sell this type of furniture. I print off the ones I like and put them into a three-ring binder for later. If you are at all handy, I think you could make this yourself easily. even without "official plans". Just measure up the dimensions on any piece of conventional furniture in your house and use those dimensions as a basis for your rustic pieces. That's what I do. Incidentally, I'm female and all thumbs, but I have learned to use a power drill and the band saw, so if I can do this, anyone can! -- Cheers, Renee M.

The tenon cutters on E-bay ARE from Lee Valley OR someone just used the LV catalogue descriptions in describing their goods. The wording on the E-bay listing is, in spots, verbatim of the LV catalogue and the cutters themselves are identical in looks to LV.

In American dollars, you can get the LV set for 329.00 (using the onsite currrency converter). With 4 days left on the auction, it could be a close race.
