Bob, and anyone else who's interested, I've been R&Ding solar water heaters for 26 years. I'll send you plans for a collector which you can build in the privacy of your own home. A $10 donation is requested, but not required.

This heater works extremely well in non freezing weather. It will freeze if you don't drain it for the winter. Where I live this gives me plenty of hot water for seven or eight months of the year/ Here in Orygun, we don't get enough sun in winter to make much of a difference anyhow, although I'm going to start experimenting around with a totally freezeproof solar water heater for preheating water soon. The cost is less than $200, possibly less than $100 if you can locate a used tempered glass sliding door panel. Plus an electric water heater, from which you remove the heating elements, and replace wtih 1" pipe nipples.

Ya gotta know how to sweat copper pipe joints, or learn how (this is very, very easy)

How many takers? I'll need your real email address to e it to you.

Could I have a copy of the plans too? I don't know what "sweating" copper pipes is though... Teach me and I'll work on it. Thank-you very much in advance. leslie@webolium.com

I haven't built one, but I lived in a house that had solar collectors on the roof. It worked great even though it was almost 30 years old. We had two water heaters side by side--which helped when it was cloudy and in the winter when you don't get so much direct sunlight (angle is different). It saved us a lot on electricity.

Robert, Leslie, the plans are "in the mail"

It may take you two or three minutes for them to download into your inbox.

Good luck; I hope you enjoy your water heater as much as I do. I have used solar about 98% of the time in the warm months, for 26 years. The system pays for itself in one or two years!

JOJ, I am also very interested in your plans and would greatly appreciate a copy. I'm surprised you haven't had more "takers".
