Word on this server!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Troll-free Private Saloon : One Thread

If you are interested:

The server greenspun.com, which is this forum's current home, is being taken off line. Luckily, Philip Greenspun and the photo.net full-timers are working on a way to assimilate our forum into the photo.net service. Our forum will live! I received word today that this should all take place after the holidays some time. I will continue to be the forum moderator. They will provide me with a heads-up notice shortly before the transfer.

Our forum doesn't refer to this one but to a photography forum. Unless Unk knows better, this is probably toast.

Best wishes,,,,

Z, at least one other board on LUSENET sends out cookies from "photo.net" with every thread. FYI

-- helen (f@y.i), December 12, 2001.

Helen:

All of the boards here have cookies from photo.net. I refuse them. This is about the server being taken off line. It is supported by arsdigita. I am told that certain photo sites will become part of the photonet. net site. The rest will disappear into the fog and the mist. Just what I have been told.

Will wait for what Unk has been told about this site.

Best Wishes,,,,

This must be a good time to rummage the archives and save off anything worth saving. If the server goes offline the archives are likely to vanish in the mists along with the forums. Too bad.

Of course a good 95% of the archives weren't worth a plug nickel ten minutes after the last reply was posted - but there are some gems of wit, humor and social commentary in there that will disappear, too.

Unk has been told nothing of this. Unk is blissfully unaware of any impending doom. I guess Unk could write to Phil and ask about it. Yep, Unk could probably do that, but will he?

but there are some gems of wit, humor and social commentary in there that will disappear

Why thank you LN, I'm honored!

Unk is going to take another hit of cheeze whiz and zone out

-- (cin@cin.cin), December 12, 2001.

Perhaps I was referring to the archives of the Ask A Drunk forum, a place where the wit flies like... like... um, like flies.

-- Little Nipper (canis@minor.net), December 12, 2001.

One of the reasons it's nearly impossible for some people to move on to other subjects is because of the archives. Let's let it all go just like in real life.

-- helen forgets everything anyway (who@can.keep.track?), December 12, 2001.

Oh Helen! Bet you have all your highschool yearbooks. Either that or none as I. Lots of people take pictures and Lusenet archives are kinda like that. Wouldn't miss them but others would.

-- Carlos (riffraff@cybertime.net), December 12, 2001.

Carlos, I remember about five of the people in my high school yearbooks, assuming I still have yearbooks somewhere. I'm just tired of seeing arguments where archives are used to back up a current opinion based on quotations from 19--.

But, helen, that contradicts what you said on June 16, 1998 at 4:15 PM:

I'll NEVER get tired of seeing arguments where archives are used to back up a current opinion based on quotations from 19--. I could just read them over and over!!!

From here:

Hey, I'm not dead yet... But seriously the easiest thing to do with photo forums is move them into photo.net. The site has a full-time staff. For the rest of the greenspun.com stuff, I'm not pulling the plug immediately. But I want to make sure that the services are rebuilt in a way that is sustainable. I've already told Steve that we can move his forum onto photo.net and redirect seamlessly from old greenspun.com bookmarks.

Conjecture, conjecture. I hope this one stays for a while. I prefer the company and the format to the other forum. Dennis is already at the other place trying [imo] to stir up another forum war. Who needs the grief?

Anita:

This means that you actually understood what THE Dennis said. I bow before your cognitive abilities. ;o)))

Maybe Doris Day had a brain under all that hairspray:

Que sera, sera!
Whatever will be, will be.
The future's not ours to see.
Que sera, sera!

-- Little Nipper (canis@minor.net), December 13, 2001.

what i think -- that was unfair. I had to stop and think if I could possibly have posted that...

-- helen (slow@slower.slowing), December 13, 2001.

By-the-by Anita:

I tend to ignore THE Dennis. As I recall, I was south of the equator when the famous baby selling incident occurred. I know nothing about it.

I have been involved on boards with THE Dennis for years. I have replied one time. For the most part he doesn't say anything that is of use or of interest to me. I use the ignore button.

I have to ration my time. ;o)))

what@i.think and helen, that was a very amusing exchange!

-- David L (bumpkin@dnet.net), December 13, 2001.

The board is getting back to normal.

-- (Lurker22@Home.Now), December 14, 2001.

Here is the latest word from Phil Greenspun on the future of Unk's Private Saloon:

"I'm currently trying to figure out how to redesign these services so that

1. users are authenticated, e.g., before posting they have to register and respond to an email message (we won't know who they are but at least we'll know that they supplied an email address where they can receive mail)

2.a person is available to handle service inquiries

3.a programmer is available to provide enhancements based on user needs

4.the site is financially self-sustaining, i.e., either the owners of bboards or the most active posters are contributing to the costs of sysadmin, programming, hosting/bandwidth, and customer service"

-- Little Nipper (
canis@minor.net), December 17, 2001.

LN:

As I am sure you know you can't close an anchor with an italics.

We already do #1. The rest is about money. Just my observation.
