Bathtub leak...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We redid the plumbing for a bathtub. Had a leak, and parts no longer available for it. My dad (retired plumber) was out for a visit and replaced it for us. Everything was fine, but they were having a problem with a drill they were useing. (LONG story, but the orig. was installed by a handyman, not plumber....). Drill wasn't working, set it down in the tub and it came to life and put a small hole in the side of the avocado green tub. What's the best way to just patch the hole to keep the water from getting out? We're putting the place on the market after the holidays and figure that whoever buys is gonna remodel anyway. Thanks.

Plastic or metal tub?

The larger harware store carry a tube of stuff called "Plumber's Goop", it is a clear sealant like caulking that seals all plumbing leaks in metal or plastic. It works well, I have used it to fix leaks in plastic drain pipe, no leaks after 7 years so far!

'70's avocado green fiberglass....

color wont match,, but J B weld would work

jb weld epoxy(can be found just about anywhere) or auto body filler which would cure quicker. If the hole is larger than about a #2 pencil I'd apply a bit of jb weld, then fiberglas screen, After it's cured, wet-sand and paint with semi-gloss enamel matching color, use a piece of cardboard with a hole cut in it for a stencil so you don't spray much more than the repair itself.

70s avocado green and burnt orange has been back in style lately.

I'd agree with Annie, the plumbers Goop works great and if you wanted to get picky you could buy a little bottle of matching apliance or porcelain sink touch up paint.Good luck

Magna Flux is the best for this sort of thing, provided you could get to the rear of the hole without too much trouble (although the same would apply to all others listed)... Its basically JB weld in a tube that you mix by hand- it isnt goopy. Put a piece on, until it starts to come throuhg the hole and cut the excess- on the inside of the tub- off. I would personally use modeling paint to match the colar and appy a small dab. I used magna flux to repair my alumimum canoe (4 inch X 1/4 gash and its haeld for 3 2 week canoe trip. I would up ixing 3 other holes in other peoples canoes while on these trips. I would not recommend the auto body filler (bondo) because it will leak water- it is porous unless painted.
