Well Unk:

I tried. It said that Z was already registered. So, I guess this is goodby.

Just to let everyone else know that whatever Z posts there isn't me.

Best Wishes,,,,,

Z

By-the-by:

Just to let you know that I have enjoyed your company and comments. It has meant a lot to me.

-- Z1X4Y7 (Z1X4Y7@aol.com), December 06, 2001.

I am confused. Why is Z saying goodbye? (In my heart I always call him XYZ anyway ...)

Is the new place the feeder forum? Will it feed this place here? Is this place on last call? Is Z sayin' goodbye from here too?

The rules there are a little disconcerting ... no inaccuracies, sexually oriented comments, false information, etc. Now I cannot live without a daily input of inaccuracies. And I can see where I will have to watch my tongue more when I am there. Self-editing is such a slippery slope.

Does this mean what I post is not really me? Can we get an exemption? Or can we tease from there to here, where comments seem to take on a life of their own?

Thank you Unk, for your efforts.

Your faithful lobbyist,

I get a blank screen when I click on this. [Sigh] Have I been banned before even saying who I was?

LOL Anita

I'm getting it to. No surprise, mind you. =)

There are many other hostboard forums. I'm sure a name can only be chosen once. It doesn't mean the person who got 'your' name will be posting on Unk's particular forum. Guess it's time to be creative. : ) Just let this board know what your new name will be like Dog did.

-- Pammy (pamela_sue57@hotmail.com), December 06, 2001.

I'm getting the big blank page.

-- Peter Errington (petere7@starpower.net), December 06, 2001.

Blank screen for me, too. I know my handle's a little weird here, but I'm not anyone to fear. Is this place shutting down?

-- (just an@anonymous.one), December 06, 2001.

Nobody HAS to go there, or leave here, or do anything. I just wanted to open it, and so I have.

For those getting a blank screen, I think 'they' are having server trouble.

-- Uncle Deedah (unkeeD@yahoo.com), December 06, 2001.

Gaaawd Z, such a wussy! Not even willing to use a different name? LOL

-- (gimee@break.), December 06, 2001.

Unk, I don't think we are all having server problems. I live in Northern Virginia. Anita lives in Texas. I think one other complainer lives in Ohio somewhere. And we sure don't all have the same Internet Service provider.

-- Peter Errington (petere7@starpower.net), December 06, 2001.

Gimee:

I can read IP's from this board so I'se know's who you is. I have been Z since the early 90's; I don't go to places where I am not Z. Apparently, you don't care if I don't contribute. No skin off of my back. I don't remember you contributing anything. Yep, you are just a parasite.

As I said; SMZYK. Understand that, highschool student. Probably don't know how to transcribe script into English. I thought as much.

"I can read IP's from this board so I'se know's who you is."

So which is it Z, are you really afraid to change your name, or is it that you don't want to go to a board unless you can spy on the other posters?

The server seems to be responding today. I'm AnitaS. That's easy for me to remember, and Anita is ALWAYS taken by the time I visit.

-- Z1X4Y7 (Z1X4Y7@aol.com), December 07, 2001.

Actually, this is what Phil is saying on the home page: I'm currently trying to figure out how to redesign these services so that
  1. users are authenticated, e.g., before posting they have to register and respond to an email message (we won't know who they are but at least we'll know that they supplied an email address where they can receive mail)
  2. a person is available to handle service inquiries
  3. a programmer is available to provide enhancements based on user needs
  4. the site is financially self-sustaining, i.e., either the owners of bboards or the most active posters are contributing to the costs of sysadmin, programming, hosting/bandwidth, and customer service
When these services were built in the mid-1990s it made a lot of sense. Running a database-backed Web server was an esoteric art that required expensive hardware and proprietary software. But as we enter the year 2002 there are quite a few 14-year-olds who've set up Linux, Postgres, and OpenACS in less than one day. With a $500 PC and a DSL line, they end up having all the collaboration tools that dotcoms spent $10 million to construct.

Bottom line: prepare for some changes to these services!

What I think, I am only reporting what Phil sent to moderators on those sites which he wants to keep alive. Phil is a kind of photo guy; iffin ye knows him.

"I don't go to places where I am not Z. Apparently, you don't care if I don't contribute. No skin off of my back. I don't remember you contributing anything. Yep, you are just a parasite."

Z,

As you may know, I specialize in analysis and resolution of problems with the ego. Your problem is obvious and I think I can help you.

You have an extremely large ego, but very little actual self-esteem to fill it with... this is like trying to blow up a balloon when you can't muster up enough breaths to fill it. This is why you are constantly seeking praise from others by telling stories about your adventures and your accumulation of materialistic objects.

Was there any one particular incident earlier in your life in which someone did something to you which made you dislike yourself, or was there a repetitive pattern of this kind of treatment? Perhaps you yourself actually did some things which you are not proud of, making you feel less self-worth as a human being?

It is important to confront these incidents with honesty and forgive yourself and others involved, so that you can feel good about yourself before your neurosis becomes more severe. Let's talk. Come lay on my couch, I think I can help you.

-- cyber freud (I can help you @ be. yourself again), December 07, 2001.

Huh?? How does this response relate to my suggestion for solving your problem?

Trust me, anyone who is so insecure that his entire identity depends on the letter Z has a serious problem. Denial is not the answer, we must deal with your repressed conflicts which have infected your ego and resolve them before you can grow to become your true self.

-- cyber freud (denial@doesn't.work), December 07, 2001.

Aaaahhh Grasshoppah...when you can take the pebble from my hand, then you will have become your true self.

-- (sens@i.), December 07, 2001.

"As long as here exists" -

Pondering the eternal verities, are we? 'Tis a question for the ages, Z.

Gets me thinking of the famous Cheech & Chong line, when they're out crossing the mojave desert.

"Where are we??" "I know where we are! We're in the middle of fuckin nowhere!!"

(Uh, didn't you just say goodbye, 8 posts earlier?)

-- Debbie (dbspence@pobox.com), December 07, 2001.

OK

I tried to run a place for folks to meet and discuss issues and nonsense. Because the HTML asshole blackout fuckhead ruined it I opened this "troll free" place. But then I'm told that this place will eventually die because it is password protected, and thus it will eventually die from lack of new blood. So I open the new WWW to get new blood. And I get complaints about that too, cause some names are already taken.

So screw it, I am fuckin tired of the bullshit. If this place dies y'all are on your own.

-- Uncle Deedah (unkeeD@yahoo.com), December 07, 2001.

Sorry, Unk. I am feeling a little loopy and indulging in my usual tendency to go off-topic. I truly do not understand where Z is coming from in this thread. First one thing, then something else. I think you made a good choice and thank you for your efforts.

I am ALREADY registered at Hostboard. It is a good board. They recently did some upgrades, they take good care of the place, and it's very fast now.

If you go for the UBB and not the HTML which I assume you did, the forum is protected from the open-tag nonsense that the jerkoffs used to take the Greenspun forums down.

If the upshot is that people are not registering because their NAME is taken, you're right, it is a bunch of BS.

-- Debbie (dbspence@pobox.com), December 07, 2001.

You've been great Unk. Just ignore Z and Flint, they both have inflated ego problems. Any normal healthy person will have no problem finding a new name to use on the other board.

-- cyber freud (Unk @ is. da man), December 07, 2001.

Somebody already has my name there too. Then I thought cool! I get to be a whole new name and no one will ever guess who I am. As long I never mention the *$%@! goats. Or the mule. Or the chickens.

>:)

-- helen (mule@got.glanders.or.something), December 08, 2001.

Aww c'mon, Z. There's a topic over there called Underpants Talk (I'm not making this up). You wouldn't want to miss that, would you? Can't you just use your whole name? Surely there's not another Z1X4Y7 registered. We're all gonna be playing "Guess Who I Am?" for awhile...it'll be fun!

Thanks, Unk. It looks like LUSENET may not be around for the long haul. Your dedication to this strange crew is appreciated.

-- (just an@anonymous.one), December 08, 2001.

I didn't know underpants could talk. Besides, someone's already posted there telling us we suck! Gotta love that. :-p

-- (just an@anonymous.one), December 08, 2001.

Z --

Just register there under your whole X..Y..Z handle. The name will appear on the left in the box. Then sign the body of your copy with "Z".

I registered as Oxsys, not quite understanding the system, and now just sign Oxy in the block with the response. Very similar to same set up here.

Now, Flint I don't know what to do with. Flint is considered a sacred stone of fire. I will have to pray about it. (In my underpants.)

-- Oxy (Oxsys@aol.com), December 08, 2001.

Is this a sign from God?

-- Oxy (Oxsys@aol.com), December 08, 2001.

It is done. I have registered there. I have posted there. Yet, Greenspun will remain my homeplace unless Phil makes changes that prevent that. This place is faster, easier to read, easier to use and altogether superior in every respect (except one that doesn't need naming). I hope the move is not necessary.

Z,

Your registration is *global* to all of the hostboards -- in other words, no matter which forum I post to, I will be "smpoole7."

The odds that someone before you might choose "Z" aren't that bad. I'll bet there's an "A" over there, too.

I had to chuckle when I read this thread, though ... first, you complain that someone has already used "Z." Then Flint says that someone has taken "Flint." Now *YOU* admit that you took "Flint!"

Heh. :)

Blessed are they with a sense of humor, for they shall laugh last ... unless someone else does another funny after them ;-)

Now then, a pressing question for Unk :

Did you by any chance (hope, hope) save any of the recent Wild West threads (the ones that you had to remove to protect the forum from further damage) ... ?

On one thread in particular, I was composing a reply, only to find it had bit the dust!

As to Z, only his hairdresser knows for sure, lol.

-- Uncle Deedah (unkeeD@yahoo.com), December 08, 2001.

So where would you prefer we start new threads, Unk? I can go either way. [Don't tell Pammy I said that.]

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), December 09, 2001.

How about both places, just like before? Weren't there different threads some put up here and some at the open www by people who went to both?

It does seem a little schizophrenic, but how else to build, feed and sustain what we've now got going? (I mean, we currently have at least two chatrooms, too...) I like the open access to the other place and the protective freedom (and easy-to-view format) of this place.

-- Oxy (Oxsys@aol.com), December 09, 2001.

Anita! I never would have guessed!!! ; )
