Rebel G: How to extreme closeups with flash

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hi, Do I understand that when I turn on the flash, it switches the aperture to wide open? I want to take pictures of objects maybe 6-9 inches wide and am suffering now from limited depth of field. (Using built-in flash.)

Would I be better off in manual mode? Another option?

6-9 inches wide or 6-9 inches from the camera?

Using manual mode for indoor flash is generally good, and you could set whatever aperture you want for more DOF.

Taking photos 6-9 inches (if thats what you want to do) away from the camera with the built in flash poses a couple of problems (a) the shadow of the lens may block the built in flash from hitting your subject, (b) unless you have a prime WA or macro lens, you probably cannot focus that close, and (c) flash may not provide an accurate exposure at that range.

If you are just going to use the close focusing feature of your zoom, and are actually 1.5 to 2+ feet away from the subject, try it in manual, stopped down to about f16.
