Beef cattle

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We are looking into purchasing some beef calves that are supposed to be a mix of Holstien and Hereford (spell?). They are black with a white face and appear to be about 275 lbs. at 3 months (?). Is this a good mix and what are we likely to end up with for type of meat and bone structure. I have been around dairy most of my life and dont know a whole lot about beef. Terry

Black baldies are usally a Hereford-angus cross.

Terry:

Go to the bottom of the new threads page to the categories. Select Livestock - General. Once the threads appear, scroll down to the one on Freezer Beef. Which Breed? It should answer your question. If the price is right - I'd go for it.

This cross will look like a black Hereford. It will have a lot of bone and will have less muscling in the hindquarters. It will take a bit more feed to finish out to the extent of a beef cross. The quality of the meat will be just as good.
