Help! Need Exposure Dial Icon Meanings for Rebel II

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

My daughter lost her Rebel II manual but wants me to take pictures for her this weekend! Can anyone translate the icons for me? I am calling Canon for a manual, but some help from the experts here will sure help.

Thanks, Chef

I'll see what I can remember about the Rebel 2000 (may not be exactly the same as the Rebel II):

Portrait mode (person's head icon) selects a wide aperture for blurred backgrounds.

Landscape mode (mountain icon) selects narrow aperture for greatest depth of field.

Macro mode (Flower icon) is for colse up photos - I think the camera selects a narrow aperture to minimize loss of depth of field that is typical with close ups.

Sports mode (person running icon) selects a shutter speed around 1/250 - 1/500 to capture action. I think this is the only mode where the Rebel will go to a continuous focusing mode (the others will lock once focused)

Night time (?) mode (I don't remember the icon) I think this mode needs a flash and will only expose for the subject and not the background. The Rebel II may not have this mode.

When in doubt, use P (full automatic program).

I hope this helps some.
