You need a Canon Speedlite flash that has an "E" in its model number to use automated through-the-lens (TTL) flash metering on an EOS camera.

Plain "E" flashes support TTL and usually A-TTL metering; "EZ" flashes support TTL and A-TTL metering with zooming and "EX" flashes support TTL and A-TTL with the addition of E-TTL on compatible cameras.

NK Guy's right, you will not get TTL metering with the 166A attached to it. But the flash will work on the EOS 300, and use it's own flash sensor to provide auto flash functions. You shouldn't have to set the shutter speed as the old Canon Speedlites should set it or at least keep it under 1/90 for you. But you will have to set the aperture to whatever the flash calculator tells you. Using the camera in manual mode will actually take some of the confusion out of using an auto flash like the 166A.

Ggetting a new EX series Speedlite will make flash photography easier and will make good use of the flash system designed into your camera, so you still might want to buy one.
