computer viruses

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I am supposed to be taking the week off (and I am really enjoying it:o)), so I don't want to take the time to read through everything here. But we came back to look this morning and discovered that we are not alone in suffering from viruses. Tom spent the better part of the day trying to clean our two computers, as both were infected. I am wondering if any of you have met up with these viruses, since I was getting suspicious e-mail with some of your names on them. I don't think any of you really sent them, as they were all identical and I even got one supposedly from Tom!

The viruses are: JS_EXCEPTION.GEN and WORM_BADTRANS.B

Do any of you know what these are and what they do? We think we are clean now, but we want to know.

The e-mails were totally blank with what appeared to be blank attachments. The subject line said simply, "Re:". The four I got were supposedly from Tom (my husband), Hoot, Lesley, and Mitch. I believe the virus was somehow responsible for sending itself. I also think the e-mails were a symptom, not a cause, as the viruses appear to come from a different source--some one or thing gaining access through the internet somehow.

Okay, back to my week off:o). Be back Monday with a fresh addition of "Notes from a Canadian Yankee".

By the way, most of us are better now, but my 5-year-old started throwing up today. Thanks to all of you who wished us well and are praying for us.

Hi Cathy, several people seem to be getting these viruses, it was on our news that there has been an outbreak throughout the country, so it isn't just on our forum.. You are describing exactly what everyone else seems to have been going through. I am not opening any e-mails and so far I am testing clean. I don't know all the technical details, sorry. But don't open any e-mails with attachments or from a source you don't know. I am not opening any right now from anyone, or sending any to anyone, so if you get one with my name on it, it isn't from me!

The virus enters as an answered email with attachments, do not even read the text, that alone will get you tagged, do not trust any email even if you know the names. Only open email from confirmed sources, now that the virus has been your puter it has everybodies email on your address book and will in turn attack them so warn everybody to not open or even read the text. To rid your self of this virus; right click on the suspected email, click left on delete; then do a componet by componet shut down. Restart and do a virus scan, it is usually gone. This virus gets by Norton and McAfee both.

If you have the JS_EXCEPTION.GEN virus PC-Cillin is a good program to get rid of it but you also have to go into your temporary internet cookies and get rid of any dodgy urls, if you run down the list you will find files with the word sex, teensluts, etc (you get the idea) and you have to erase them all. Also you have to go into your Preferences to change your Internet server homepage back to normal, delete any recently visited sites and erase all dodgy e-mail from your Outlook Express, which may save it even when you have deleted it from your inbox. Check all of your cookies default listings too, hopefully this should get rid of it.
