Help! Who needs Punnett Squares and pedigree charts?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Middle School Science : One Thread

OK, here's my problem. I am working with Punnett squares and pedigree charts and looking for something to make it more relevant to the the "real" world. The question is:

Do these things have any use in the real world or are they just for instructional purposes? Does a doctor, for example, actually use a pedigree chart when investigating family histories of disease (cancer, heart disease, etc)? Does a genetic counsellor for family planning use one when looking a couple's risks of passing on genetic diseases?

Here, by the way, is a pedigree chart I made for my heredity unit. It could be used as an assessment, but I will be using it as a group activity and will make a simpler version for the test.
