feed ration for deer

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

i am raising whitetail deer and was looking for a practical feed ration supplement other than bagged feed mill type .i'm using oats and shelled corn along with free choice hay. does anyone have experience with there own ration? I've used feed mill supplement before but it was pretty expensive. thanks tom from illinois

You might try hay pellets. I don't know much about deer, but I kow that several of the petting zoo places I've been to always have alfalfa pellets for the deer & they seem to like them. I have feed pellets (to suppliment expensive hay) to my horses & goats with good results.

You don't say how many you are raising, but you might try visiting your local grocery store, explain what you are doing and ask them for the older produce. Heads of lettuce and cabbage come in large boxes wrapped in - you guessed it - lettuce and cabbage leaves, which they throw away. I did this when I was raising rabbits. I also visited farmer's markets and fruit and veggie stands.

An alternative, depending on your comfort level is dumpster diving for the same items.

Go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/ and put exotic in the search engine, there are several groups that specialize in game raising. A friend of mine and myself sell milk to some of the ones on the Texas list. Beware if you are of the meek set that when you put exotic into any search engine you will have to weed through some manure. Vicki
